John "Jack" Wilton Gibson (Born September 24th, 2001), is an Irish-American competitive swimmer, who currently competes for the University of Virginia. He declared for the Irish national team in December of 2020. He was able to compete for Ireland due to his father being an Irish citizen born and raised in Belfast . Jack obtained his Irish passport in November of 2020. Jack competed in the 2020 Summer Olympics, competing in in the men's 200m breaststroke placing 17th.

Early Life[edit]

Jack was born to Fred and Sara Gibson. His father was born and raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland. His father held Irish citizenship his entire life and registered Jack and his four siblings on the Irish foreign birth registry shortly after his birth. Jack was raised in the Northern Virginia city of Burke, Virginia, where he would attend Lake Braddock Secondary School. Jack was an elite level youth basketball player, playing for his high schools varsity team his freshman year. In 7th and 8th Grade he played on the same AAU Basketball Team as NBA Player Trevor Keels and collegiate standouts Jeremy Roach and Hunter Dickinson. However he would quit basketball to focus on swimming full time at 16.

Career[edit]

In High School, Jack won the VHSL 6A Sate Title in the 100 Breast and 200 IM, in both his junior and senior seasons. As a recruit he was ranked 32nd in the nation and 3rd in the state of Virginia. He would take his visits to Michigan, North Carolina State, Arizona, Florida and University of Virginia. Eventually committing to UVA on fall signing day of 2019. Jack enrolled at The University of Virginia in August of 2020, declaring a major of History.
