Shahzad Khalil (Urdu: شهزادخلیل), is a Pakistani television Director/Producer.

Personal life[edit]

Shahzad Khalil who was known as the famous Pakistani TV drama director had done huge amount of great work and appreciable effort in the ground of direction. Late Shahzad Khalil was a talented person who started his career through direction of music videos in the year 1970.[1] He then switched to directing drama serials. “Ankahi” brought him to limelight. Later he moved from PTV Lahore to Karachi Center. His wife is a veteran Pakistani Actress, They have two children, Ibrahim and Umar. Government of Pakistan gave him the pride of performance award in 1986. He died of cardiac arrest in 1988.[2][3]

Career[edit]

Khalil was not only an intelligent TV Director but he had a great personality, who got fame in a very short period of time from his directed dramas for Pakistan Television. He gained his first recognition as director for his TV serial Teshra Kinara in 1980 in which several legendary actors participated like Sahira Kazmi, Usman Peerzada, Rahat Kazmi, Shafi Mohammad and Jamil Fakhri. Shahzad Khalil directed play 'Bi Jamalo', in which Badar Khalil played Bi Jamalo herself, whom he had married (in real life) a few years before the drama hit screened.

Shahzad Khalil's Tanhaiyaan now considered a cult classic, was aired in 1985. The drama featured star cast of veterans such as Shehnaz Sheikh, Marina Khan, Badar Khalil, Azra Sherwani, Asif Raza Mir, Behroze Sabzwari, Qazi Wajid, Jamshed Ansari, Yasmeen Ismail, Durdana Butt, Mohammad Yousaf, Sultana Zafar, Subhani Ba Younas and Imtiaz Ali.[4][5] Haseena Moin, writer of Tanhaiyaan said: 'The experience of working with Shehzad was wonderful. He was a thorough gentleman and extremely good in his work.'[6]

The legendary Shahzad Khalil has introduced several TV star like Shafi Muhammad Shah in Teshra Kinara[7] and Samina Peerzada in Panah[8], who became super stars in Pakistani television industry.[9][10]

In 2014, when his wife Badar Khalil finally packed her bags to go and live with her son in Canada and she said in an interview with Dawn News that:

PTV is celebrating its 50th anniversary; I don't see any remembrance for Shahzad Khalil. Are people so easily forgotten? It is hard to believe!”[11]

He was widely recognized as Pakistan’s best director due to his back to back successful projects. He further expanded his role in the media industry as he began producing drama serials as well, eventually initiating his own production company. A director with immense talent, he is still remembered by the drama lovers of Pakistan for his highly successful direction Tanhaiyaan, which won him a lot of awards as well as national and international fame and repute.[12]Indus TV Network presented Special Award to the director Shehzad Khalil for his outstanding contribution to TV in the 1st Indus Drama Awards in 2005, presented by Agha Nasir and Ghazanfar Ali, received by Badar Khalil.[13]
