Chorthippus brunneus, the common field grasshopper, is a species of grasshopper found across Europe, much of Asia and North Africa .[1] It is common in mostly dry and often sparse grassland, from the beginning of summer until October. Very hairy below the thorax. Song consist of short shirps like time-signal pips.

It is part of a group of species (biguttulus-group) that are very difficult to identify morphologically and previously was classified (with C. biguttulus and C. mollis); it is the only member of this group present in the British Isles (where it is common and widespread). In continental Europe, where the three species occur together, individuals can be distinguished using song characteristics.
