The George Jessel Show is an American old-time radio comedy-variety program. It was broadcast on CBS from January 2, 1934, until August 26, 1934. The show's name was changed to George Jessel Variety Hour on June 17, 1934.[1]
Comedian George Jessel, who headlined the program, was at that time a well-known entertainer from his work as a toastmaster and as a comedian in vaudeville. He was joined on his radio program by vocalists Mildred Bailey and Vera Van, with Freddie Rich and his orchestra providing instrumental music. Despite Jessel's celebrity status, he failed to succeed in this or two other radio shows. Radio historian John Dunning wrote in The Encyclopedia of Old-Time Radio, "Jessel's radio shows were plagued by little excitement, no appreciable ratings strength, and no encore seasons."[1]
