Career[edit]

He began his research and teaching career at the University of Illinois at Chicago and was promoted to Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at UIC in 1997. During his time at UIC Tsai also served as the founding Director of the Distributed Real-Time Intelligent Systems Laboratory.[2]

Biography[edit]

Jeffrey J.P. Tsai(蔡進發) was born in Budai, Jiayi, Taiwan (布袋,嘉義,台灣). He earned his MS at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois in 1983, and later received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Northwestern University in 1985. His research focuses on using artificial intelligence techniques to develop more reliable complex software systems. Tsai and his research team produced the world’s first embedded software system using knowledge-based transformation paradigms. This technology is now used in communication software systems worldwide.[1] Tsai is also an expert on software engineering, distributed real time systems, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, and sensor networks.

In 2001 Tsai took sabbatical leave from UIC to found Taichung Healthcare and Management University and served as its first President in 2001 (now Asia University, Taiwan). The university was established to nurture future leaders to become global citizens with an ambition to improve health, care, innovation, and excellence through emphasis on certain core capabilities, such as language, information processing, social service, and professional competence in its curriculum.[3]

Tsai has published numerous research articles in top journals such as IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, IEEE Transactions on System, Man, and Cybernetics, etc. He is also the co-author of twelve books and has also contributed to many other books.[4] Tsai has received a number of honors and awards for his distinguished academic and professional achievements, most notably the following:

  • University Scholar Award, University of Illinois Foundation, 1994, for "distinction as a member of the faculty of the University of Illinois."[5]
  • IEEE Technical Achievement Award, IEEE Computer Society, 1997, for "contribution to knowledge-based software engineering." [5]

Tsai has also been elected

  • Fellow, The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 1996, for "contributions to knowledge-based software engineering for time-critical systems."[6]
  • Fellow, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), 1997, for "pioneering studies in knowledge-based software engineering, particularly for research on the specification, monitoring, testing, and debugging of distributed real-time systems."[6]
  • Fellow, Society for Design and Process Science (SDPS), 1998 for “promoting creativity in design and process science.”[7]

Tsai holds many Endowed and Honorary Professorships in leading universities in the United States of America and in Asia. He was Adjunct Professor at Tulane University, a Visiting Professor at Stanford University, Visiting Scholar at the University of California at Berkeley, Chair Professor at China Medical University, Taiwan and National Chiao-Tung University, Taiwan, as well as a Senior Research Fellow of IC2 at the University of Texas at Austin.[1]
