School for Statecraft On p. 291 of her book, _John C. Calhoun, An American Portrait_[1] , author Margaret Coit says: "...Slavery was the Southerner's school for statecraft. It produced men trained to command, a breed that for generations controlled over two-thirds of American elective offices."
