Ace & Boris is an American musical duo from Columbus, Ohio. The band was formed in 2019 by vocalists and multi-instrumentalists Ace Peterson and Boris Rockwell. The duo is best known for performing in a wide range of musical styles, including pop, rock, and funk.[1]

Since their formation and subsequent signing with record label Darlar Productions, the band has released three extended plays, Sugarland (2019), Radio!! Reject (2020), and Final Cut (2020).

History[edit]

2019: Formation and first EP[edit]

Ace Peterson and Boris Rockwell initially began writing and performing music in Columbus, Ohio in 2019. Their performances were discovered by record label Darlar Productions, with whom they entered into a creative collaborative agreement that year allowing them full license over all production and distribution of their works.[1]

The group released their debut EP, Sugarland, on April 21, 2019, and immediately returned to the studio.[2]

2019-2020: Radio!! Reject and Final Cut[edit]

In February 2020, the duo completed their sophomore EP, Radio!! Reject. The subsequent tour planned to support the release was canceled due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and the band instead began recording their third EP, Final Cut.[3]

The third single from Final Cut, "Watch Me", was initially offered to Katy Perry's manager, Bradford Cobb, as a collaboration but was ultimately released as a solo track after the offer was turned down.[3] Final Cut was then released in August 2020 and Darlar Productions announced that the band would not release another song until 2021.[3]

Artistry[edit]

Influences[edit]

Musicians including Johnny Hallyday (left) and Prince (right) have influenced Ace & Boris.

As developing musicians and performers, Ace & Boris spent time studying Johnny Hallyday, Michael Jackson, and Prince.   These artists all had influences on both their musical evolution and stage performances; Ace Peterson stated:

We’re big fans of great showmanship, and we study performances from top-tier artists because we’re fans too – Prince, Michael Jackson, or Johnny Hallyday for instance.[2]

Ace & Boris have also stated that they are fans of: Jessie J, Jack White, and Bruno Mars.[2]

Musical style[edit]

The duo's music has been noted for displaying a wide variety of styles. In addition to original songs, their repertoire consists of covers "Kiss" and French rock hit, "Diego libre dans sa tête" as well as Afropop inspired outtakes.[1][4] Rockwell admits it's difficult to categorize themselves within a specific genre because of the versatility in their music. Peterson attributes this style to a wide array of influences and a background in musical training.[2]

In his playing, Peterson said that he likes to apply his technique in unconventional ways to catch audiences and listeners off guard. Peterson routinely alternates between Stratocaster, Superstrat, and custom built guitar models while playing in a variety of music modes such as Dorian, Lydian, and Mixolydian. He often incorporates extended techniques such as tap style as well. Likewise, Boris’ drum style varies by genre, melody, and tempo. The duo's rhythmic progressions incorporate rock grooves as well as Latin and Mozambique inspired patterns. Other instrumentation used in songs include electric bass, electronic keyboards, piano, and brass.[2]
