Piovego (canal)

[edit]

The Piovego canal is an artifical canal. It's an emissary of the Bacchiglione river and it's 10,17km long[1]. In the past centuries it was a very important communication route between Padua and Venice. Its name comes from the Latin word publicum, which means it was a public canal used for navigation[2].

Course

[edit]

The source is located in north central part of the old part of Padua, in the Porte Contarine Lock. The Tronco Maestro, which derives from the Bacchiglione river, joins the Inner canal. It is almost straight. It flows from west to east, along the city walls. Then it flows in Noventa Padovana and Noventana. The final part is on the border with Vigonovo, in the province of Venice.

It flows into the Brenta river near Stra.

History

[edit]

The canal was dug in 1209 [3].

Since 1995 small boats and ships navigate the canal[4].
