Mina (singer)
[edit]Myoui Mina (born March 24, 1997), better known as Mina, is a Japanese-American singer and dancer in South Korea. She is a member of the K-pop group TWICE under JYP Entertainment.
Early Life
[edit]Mina (English name Sharon), was born on March 24, 1997, in San Antonio, Texas[1]. When she was just a toddler, her and her family moved to Kobe, Japan[2]. Before being scouted by JYP Entertainment, she studied ballet for 11 years, before starting modern dance. In 2013, she was found by JYP Entertainment when shopping with her mom. She auditioned in Japan, and became a trainee in South Korea on January 2, 2014[3].
Career
[edit]Before debuting, Mina was in several music videos for other idols, including: “Only You” by miss A, “Stop Stop It” by GOT7, “Feel” by Junho, and “Rose” by Wooyoung[4]. In 2015, Mina was one of the 16 contestants to appear on the survival television show Sixteen. In the end, Mina was one of the nine girls chosen to debut in the girl group TWICE. In October of 2015, Mina debuted with TWICE with the song, “Like Ooh-Aah,” off of the group’s first mini album The Story Begins[5]. Debuting made Mina the member of the group who spent the shortest time as a trainee, with a little over a year and a half[6]. TWICE has gone on to release music frequently over the past four years in South Korea and Japan, with the most recent Korean song being “Feel Special,” and the most recent Japanese song “Fake and True.”[7]
Health
[edit]In July of 2019, it was announced a few weeks before TWICE’s world tour, “TWICELIGHTS,” that Mina was not going to be appearing on the tour at the different stops. JYPE posted a message to the fan message board about her health, saying that she is struggling with “sudden extreme anxiety and insecurity toward performing on stage.”[8] Ater this, the message announced that Mina’s condition required her to sit out so she can focus on her health and to get professional treatment[9]. Over the course of the world tour, an outpouring of the fan’s support for Mina came, and in each concert at a certain point, turned their TWICE lightsticks to mint green, which is Mina’s representative color for the lightsticks, to show their love and support to Mina. On August 27, 2019, JYPE posted another message to the fan message board, confirming that Mina is suffering from anxiety disorder[10]. They stated that the extreme anxiety occurs “continuously or intermittently and unexpectedly, and the level of anxiety also changes suddenly.”[11] It was also announced that Mina’s participation in future events and the schedule was going to be decided by Mina herself, and that it should purely be based on how she is feeling[12]. On September 23, 2019, Mina joined the rest of her group members in their comeback, “Feel Special,” which was their first comeback since Mina’s diagnosis[13]. She sang for it, and appeared in the music video, with lyrics that were extremely personal to her. Although she joined them for the comeback, Mina sat out of the promotions and special stages for the song. She also joined them still for their newest Japanese song too, “Fake and True.” On October 20, 2019, TWICE had their annual Halloween performance, which Mina joined for TWICE’s fourth anniversary. When Mina was given the mic, she said thank you, and then got hugged by the rest of the members as she got emotional due to all of the support from fans and the members[14].
