Mica Levi[edit]

Mica Levi (also known as "Micachu") is a British composer and singer, born in 1987 in Surrey to a record collector and professional Cellist and began her musical career learning violin from a young age[1]. She was classically trained at the Purcell School on a scholarship from the Music and Ballet Scheme where she studied composition, violin and viola. She then went on to win another scholarship to study composition at the Guildhall School of Music where she met 'the Shapes' (of eventual band 'Micachu and the Shapes') Raisa Khan and Marc Pell.[2]

Mica's work beyond The Shapes ranges from acoustic compositions for orchestra to an award winning and BAFTA nominated film score for the film Under The Skin.

Solo Works and Composition[edit]

While studying at Guildhall, Mica was commissioned to compose a piece for the London Philharmonic Orchestra. [3]

Levi performed as a DJ in London and released a mixtape titled Filthy Friends, which was posted on her official Myspace page.[4]

Mica was an artist in residence at London's Southbank Centre in 2010.[5]

In 2013, Mica composed the soundtrack to Under the Skin, a film directed by Jonathan Glazer and starring Scarlett Johansson. The film is based on the eponymous novel by Michel Faber.

Micachu and The Shapes[edit]

With Raisa Khan on keyboard and Marc Pell on drums.

In 2009, the band received a grant from the PRS for Music Foundation.

Jewellery[edit]

The debut album from Micachu and the Shapes was released in 2009, a joint venture between record labels Rough Trade and Accidental Records and was co-produced by Matthew Herbert. [6]

The album was generally well received and has a current rating of 75 on Metacritic.[7]

Chopped and Screwed[edit]

Micachu and the Shapes also collaborated with The London Sinfonietta, accompanied by the release of the album 'Chopped & Screwed' (Rough Trade, 2011), recorded live in front of an audience at King's Place.[8]

Never[edit]

In 2012, the band released their second studio album 'Never' (Rough Trade, 2012[9]) which was fully recorded and produced by the band themselves at Pell's handmade studio. Known for recording with unconventional, often household or handmade instruments such as hoovers, decks of cards and bowed CD racks, the album was accompanied by self-directed and produced music videos for every track.

Good Sad Happy Bad[edit]

Released in 2015 on Rough Trade. For this album, rather than showing up to the studio with songs written out, the trio started with a collaborative improvisation, from which Levi chose sections to develop into songs, writing lyrics to the entire record "non-stop, in one avalanche."[10]

Awards and Recognition[edit]

European Film Awards, Best Composer for soundtrack to Under The Skin[11]

BAFTA nomination 2015 for soundtrack to Under The Skin[12]

LA Film Critics Award, Best Music Score for soundtrack to Under The Skin. Tied with Jonny Greenwood.[13]
