Edit summaries are vital for other users to understand your edits
[edit]Hi, IP editor, I just spent about 5 minutes figuring out what you did and why. I admit that my tea had not started fully working, but I'd like those minutes back. Edit summaries may seem like a minor indignity at the time, but they really help Wikipedia by not slowing down your fellow editors who review the edits of others. Those 5 minutes could have been used to catch and warn a vandal, for instance.
Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.
When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:
Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)
Please be sure to provide a summary of every edit you make, even if you write only the briefest of summaries. The summaries are very helpful to people browsing an article's history.
Edit summary content is visible in:
Please use the edit summary to explain your reasoning for the edit, or a summary of what the edit changes. With a Wikipedia account you can give yourself a reminder to add an edit summary by setting Preferences → Editing → Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary. Thanks!--Quisqualis (talk) 19:31, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

This is the discussion page for an IP user, identified by the user's IP address. Many IP addresses change periodically, and are often shared by several users. If you are an IP user, you may create an account or log in to avoid future confusion with other IP users. Registering also hides your IP address. |
