Duplicate images uploaded

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Dioufyfoundation.jpg. A machine-controlled robot account noticed that you also uploaded the same image under the name Image:Dioufy foundation.jpg. The copy called Image:Dioufy foundation.jpg has been marked for speedy deletion since it is redundant. If this sounds okay to you, there is no need for you to take any action.

This is an automated message- you have not upset or annoyed anyone, and you do not need to respond. In the future, you may save yourself some confusion if you supply a meaningful file name and refer to 'my contributions' to remind yourself exactly which name you chose (file names are case sensitive, including the extension) so that you won't lose track of your uploads. For tips on good file naming, see Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions about this notice, or feel that the deletion is inappropriate, please contact User:Staecker, who operates the robot account. Fair use rationale for Image:Dioufy foundation.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Dioufy foundation.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. Bolton Wanderers & Gartside

[edit]

Please see discussion between myself, FisherQueen and 86.174.25.64 at User_talk:86.174.25.64. Also see talk page of Phil Gartside and the edit summaries by myself & FisherQueen for full details of the Gartside nationality dispute. The source you have used at Phil Gartside is not valid, please revert yourself and join the discussion before you make this dispute worse. Thank you John Sloan (view / chat) 14:36, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Also, see WP:MOSFLAG. Flag icons shouldn't be used in infoboxes anyway! John Sloan (view / chat) 14:39, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Do not emphasize nationality without good reason

Wikipedia is not a place for nationalistic pride. Flags are visually striking, and placing a national flag next to something can make its nationality or location seem to be of greater significance than other things. For example, with an English flag next to him, Paul McCartney looks like an "English singer-songwriter from Liverpool who was in the Beatles"; without the flag next to him, he looks like an "English singer-songwriter from Liverpool who was in the Beatles". Emphasizing the importance of a person's citizenship or nationality above their other qualities risks violating Wikipedia's "Neutral point of view" policy."

I think thats quite clear about how pointless and needless the flags are. Please dont put them back as this will then be an edit war, and i'm sure you dont want that! Not because of the troll who started all this (The IP editor). We cant refer to Gartside as Irish without a source, its as simple as that! I know and you know that he his, but on Wikipedia, thats simply not good enough. We also shouldn't be stating Eddie Davies as english without a source either. John Sloan (sorry about logging out, but Wikipedia is giving me some problems at the minute!) Thanks 90.215.157.12 (talk) 15:08, 6 April 2009 (UTC) - Just confirming that this is my IP John Sloan (view / chat) 15:18, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

To be more clear, I normally ignore flag icons on articles to avoid these kind of petty disputes. However, now that Gartsides nationality IS disputed, we cant use his flag in the infobox. It looks very VERY untidy to not have his flag and still have Megson's & Davies's. That is the main reason I have continued to remove the flags. WP:MOSFLAGS is also clear that flags shouldn't be used at all in those types of infoboxes. However, i'm far more concerned with the article of my football team looking clean and tidy. So for me, it has to be ALL flags or NO flags. And since we cant have Gartsides, we shouldn't have any. John Sloan (view / chat) 15:36, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Since you went ahead and reverted again before waiting for my reply here. And since i'm on the verge of breaking WP:3RR, i'm going to ask you very nicely to perform a self-revert and help the article by talking this through more here or on the talk page! Thanks John Sloan (view / chat) 15:40, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, i'll quote it again then:

"Do not emphasize nationality without good reason

For example, with an English flag next to him, Paul McCartney looks like an "English singer-songwriter from Liverpool who was in the Beatles"; without the flag next to him, he looks like an "English singer-songwriter from Liverpool who was in the Beatles". I'm now going to ask FisherQueen (who is a sysop) to look over this situation and give her opinion. You seem unwilling to budge and I can no longer continue to edit the article without risk of a block. So until more input can be obtained, this matter seems unresolvable. John Sloan (view / chat) 15:50, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's a good idea to include his nationality in the biography about him, and I don't really have a problem with a flag identifying his nationality in the article about his team. There seems to be some disagreement about whether Gartside is English or Irish. I searched for a reliable source that would answer the question, but all I could find were various versions of the source you cited- it's a copy of the Wikipedia article! We need a real independent source that can tell us what his nationality is; I couldn't find one, but you might know the sources better. Are you interested in digging through the various newspaper interviews and articles until you find one in which he clearly states his nationality? The articles in question could really use this fact.

My temporary solution to the problem of people edit-warring over the words 'English' and 'Irish' was to remove his nationality entirely until we can find a source that answers the question. You added information, but since you didn't add the reliable source for the information, John had to remove it- I would have done the same thing if I'd noticed it first. It doesn't mean we don't think your information is true, it means that, since there's a lot of disagreement, we really, really need that source. I hope you'll agree that it was a good temporary solution, and help solve the problem- you can be the hero of Wikipedia for a moment if you come up with a newspaper article where he discusses it. -FisherQueen (talk · contribs) 16:04, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced BLPs

[edit]

Hello BBMSteve! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 72 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:
