Nomination of Otley Cricket Club for deletion

Otley Cricket Club

Otley Cricket Club is a member of The Airedale & Wharfedale Cricket League. The club runs three senior teams and the full range of junior teams. The first XV plays in Division A in the AWSCL.

History

One of the County’s oldest Cricket Clubs, Otley CC was formed in 1820 although there are records that suggest that cricket was played in the town even before this date.

Initially the club played on a ground now occupied by the cemetery and moved to its present Cross Green ground in 1862.

For the first 73 years of the clubs existence it played friendly matches but in 1893 the club took a huge step forward by joining the Wharfedale & Airedale Cricket League.

The club continued to play cricket in the league until after the First World War when in 1919 the club joined the Yorkshire Council League. 

The club played in the Yorkshire Council League until 1936 when they joined the newly re-formed Airedale & Wharfedale Cricket League. The following year the club won its First of Thirteen League Titles. 

In 1942 Otley started their Waddilove Cup success with victory over Menston CC. That same year the club won the League Title. 

During this period the club had many successful players; H. Daphne, W. Bishop, J. Warburton, H. Bolton & R. Scarr to name a few. The latter two would go on to write their names into the League Record Books.

In 1943 the club retained the Waddilove Cup with H. Daphne playing a key role with figures of 7-22.

The late 1950’s and early 60’s saw the club make three more final appearances winning all three with the likes of, R. Cliffe, B. Groves, D. Holdsworth & D. Watkinson.

The 1970’s brought further success to the club with three more final appearances winning two. The banned Yorkshire & England off spinner, Geoff Cope featured in the Otley CC cup winning side of 1972 alongside what were to become well known club names, R. Beadle, M. Bailey & J. Harker. All these players made the club a real force to be reckoned with during the 1970’s and into the 80’s.

The late 1970’s saw the first appearance in a Cup Final of all rounder Chris Smith. Chris has been at the forefront of everything going on at the club ever since, with a hugely successful playing career spanning three decades and his more recent off field efforts with various fundraising events and more notably been the clubs current Chairman.

During the period of the 1980’s and early 90’s the likes of Beadle, Bailey, Harker, Smith and latterly Davies featured in what is arguably the clubs most successful period with numerous 1st & 2nd XI Cup & League Titles. The 1988 season in particular was memorable with the 1st XI winning the Waddilove Cup and both 1st & 2nd XI’s taking both Division A titles respectively earning the club the Burmah Oil Trophy which is awarded to the club with the highest combined points tally over a season.

The late 90’s and turn of the Millennium, has seen very little silverware for Otley Cricket Club in League & Cup Competitions. There have been various cup final appearances for both 1st & 2nd XI’s but no trophies to show for their efforts.

The only real silverware over recent years is in the recently formed Wharfedale 20/20 competition, which has seen the club take the trophy no fewer than four times; a record number achieved by any club.

Since 1998 which was possibly the clubs lowest point, having to re-elect for their position in the League, the club has seen a rebuilding period with a real focus on building a successful junior section, hopefully leading onto successful senior sides.
