Fra Angelico

[edit]

I realise that you are trying to be in keeping with wikistyle, but I can assure you that my casual (an probably inappropriate) referral to Fra Angelico as "the good friar" is a far more accurate expression than your reinterpretation that Cosimo "monetarily inspired" the creation of the frescoes. What you are doing is introducing a concept "monetary inspiration" that is quite foreign to what the article is actually telling you, if you read it carefully.

We are dealing with a man sworn to "chastity, poverty and humility". This is about "inspiration". It isn't about money. The friar wasn't paid to paint those cells. But the brilliant patron of the arts, Cosimo, could have provided all that was necessary to make a display of his patronage, if he had chosen to do so. After all, one of the paintings is in the cell that he used for retreats.

It's not about paying the painter. It was very rarely about what the painter was actually paid. Any painter was a mere tradesman. It was all about the intrinsic cost of the material that went into making the work of art, the provision of gold leaf, lapis lazuli and vermilion. (This is all written in the article.) On the other hand, Cosimo encouraged and inspired art and learning of all sorts. It is impossible to imagine that he would not have taken a fervent interest in the embellishment of the convent that he loved. Had he acted like the average sort of rich patron, then the monastry would have become a showplace. No rich man's showplace was complete without ostentatious display. At St Marco's convent, there is none.

Regional variations of English should not be corrected

[edit]

Hello, realizing that Wikipedia is a global project, it is important to mention that there is no 'official' regional variation of English for the project. This means that "first in" wins, in most situations. Exceptions would be if the subject of the article is very specifically from a particular region, then the regional variation of English used in its article can be corrected to that region of the subject. In Countries in International Organization for Standardization, you corrected the sentence "although the Palestinian state is not technically a country, it has representation in ISO as if it was" to "...as if it were". This would seem to be more correct in some regional variations of English, particularly that of Australia and many parts of the UK. However in the US, this would be awkward, because the Palestinian state is a singular subject, and its verb should therefore be the singular form as well, in American English. Since the article was originally written in American English, it is not appropriate to correct this to your form of English, because ISO is an international subject. I am certain that your edit was intended to improve the encyclopedia, and I would like to say that your contributions are certainly welcome and appreciated; I just thought you should know about this issue, so you can avoid upsetting other editors in the future.
