Welcome![edit]

Hello, Brotherhood of St. Laurence, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.

I noticed that one of the first articles you edited appears to be dealing with a topic with which you may have a conflict of interest. In other words, you may find it difficult to write about that topic in a neutral and objective way, because you are, work for, or represent, the subject of that article. Your recent contributions may have already been undone for this very reason.

To reduce the chances of your contributions being undone, you might like to draft your revised article before submission, and then ask me or another editor to proofread it. See our help page on userspace drafts for more details. If the page you created has already been deleted from Wikipedia, but you want to save the content from it to use for that draft, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page.

One rule we do have in connection with conflicts of interest is that accounts used by more than one person will unfortunately be blocked from editing. Wikipedia generally does not allow editors to have usernames which imply that the account belongs to a company or corporation. If you have a username like this, you should request a change of username or create a new account. (A name that identifies the user as an individual within a given organization may be OK.)

In addition, if you receive, or expect to receive, compensation for any contribution you make, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation to comply with our terms of use and our policy on paid editing.

Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, visit the Teahouse, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{Help me}} before the question. Again, welcome! lavender|(formerly HMSSolent)|lambast 03:29, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that your username, "Brotherhood of St. Laurence", may not comply with our username policy. Please note that you may not use a username that represents the name of a company, group, organization, product, service, or website. Examples of usernames that are not allowed include "XYZ Company", "MyWidgetsUSA.com", and "Foobar Museum of Art". However, you are permitted to use a username that contains such a name if it identifies you individually (not your role), such as "Sara Smith at XYZ Company", "Mark at WidgetsUSA", or "FoobarFan87", but not "SEO Manager at XYZ Company".

Please also note that Wikipedia does not allow accounts to be shared by multiple people and that you may not advocate for or promote any company, group, organization, product, service, or website, regardless of your username. Please also read our paid editing policy and our conflict of interest guideline. If you are a single individual and are willing to contribute to Wikipedia in an unbiased manner, please request a change of username by completing the form at Special:GlobalRenameRequest, choosing a username that complies with our username policy. Alternatively, you can just create a new account and use that for editing. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. Thank you. lavender|(formerly HMSSolent)|lambast 03:30, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Your account has been blocked from editing because your username gives the impression that the account represents a group, club, organization, company, or website. Your username is the principal reason for the block. You are welcome to continue editing after you have chosen a new username that complies with Wikipedia's username policy, which is summarized here.

You should also read our conflict of interest guideline and be aware that promotional editing is not acceptable, regardless of the username that you choose. Additionally, if your contributions to Wikipedia form all or part of work for which you are, or expect to be, paid or compensated in any way, you must disclose who is paying you to edit here. You may also read our FAQ for article subjects

Please take a moment to either create a new account, or request a username change of your current account here. The new username that you choose must represent you as an individual person, and it must comply with Wikipedia's username policy.
  • To create a new account with a different username, simply log out of this account and then click here to make a new one.
  • If you prefer to change the username on this account, you may do so by adding the following text to the bottom of your talk page (this page): {{unblock-un|new username|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.

Please note that the new username you choose cannot already be taken or in use by another account. You can go here to search and see if the username you'd like to choose is available. If the search returns that no global account with that username exists, that means it is available to be taken.

Please also note that you are permitted to use a username that contains the name of a company or organization if it also identifies you individually, such as "Sara Smith at XYZ Company", "Mark at WidgetsUSA", or "FoobarFan87", but not "SEO Manager at XYZ Company".

Appeals: If your username does not represent a group, organization, website, or other entity described above, and if you believe that this block was incorrect or made in error, you may appeal this block by adding the following text to the bottom of your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}

Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 22:05, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia and copyright[edit]

Control copyright icon Hello Brotherhood of St. Laurence! Your additions to Brotherhood of St Laurence have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, it's important to understand and adhere to guidelines about using information from sources to prevent copyright and plagiarism issues. Here are the key points:

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices. Persistent failure to comply may result in being blocked from editing. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please ask them here on this page, or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 22:11, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Diannaa,
Thanks for your feedback. I work as the Communications Specialist at the Brotherhood of St. Laurence and have been asked to update the Brotherhood of St.Laurence (BSL) Wikipedia page. The content I an updating the page with is material from our website https://www.bsl.org.au/ and or provided by my team and does not violate any copyright as it was generated by us. I would like to include information about our strategy and also to images which we own the copyright to. Can you please accept my edits? Brotherhood of St. Laurence (talk) 23:40, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your interest in working on Wikipedia. There are a couple of problems with your submission. You cannot post copyright material on Wikipedia even if you are the copyright holder or have their permission, unless special licensing permissions are in place. That is because Wikipedia aims to be freely distributable and copyable by anyone, and all content must have the appropriate documentation in place before that can happen. Please see Wikipedia:donating copyrighted materials which explains how it works.
The second problem is conflict of interest. Writing an article about your own organisation or that of a client is strongly discouraged, as it is difficult to maintain the required neutral point of view. According to our terms of use, paid editors and people editing on behalf of their employer are required to disclose their conflict of interest by posting a notice on their user page or talk page. I have placed some information about conflict of interest below. — Diannaa (talk) 01:17, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Managing a conflict of interest[edit]

Information icon Hello, Brotherhood of St. Laurence. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page Brotherhood of St Laurence, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for article subjects for more information. We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 01:18, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dianna,
What would you suggest to fix this? I note there are some typos and I would like to include the following content which is not promoting anything:
BSL’s strategic imperative
In the decade ahead, Australia faces significant and unacceptable levels of poverty and social exclusion. Alongside the challenges of rebuilding from the COVID pandemic, factors like rising living costs, climate change and housing stress contribute to the increasing complexity and impact of poverty.
Currently 3.3 million people, including 761,000 children, are living in poverty and without changing the national response this number is likely to climb. Vulnerable groups such as First Nations people, children, young people, women, the unemployed, asylum seekers, people with disabilities, and older people are most at risk. Those facing multiple forms of disadvantage and discrimination face even greater risk of social exclusion, marginalisation and inter-generational poverty. Brotherhood of St. Laurence (talk) 03:31, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I was also hoping to include this first sentence here:
Social policy and research
BSL's Social Policy and Research Centre (SPARC) is the largest and oldest social policy research centre in a non-government welfare organisation in Australia. The team conducts timely research on the causes, consequences and measurement of poverty, inequality and socioeconomic disadvantage...organisations. Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia, and as such we are looking for coverage of notable topics with information that is supported by reliable sources. Your sources are expected to be independent of the subject. So no, I am not going to add this unsourced material. — Diannaa (talk) 11:50, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
