V18 engines and bank angles[edit]

Thanks for adding the Cummins ref. I'm still (see the talk: page) unsure about the bank angle for V18s in general. The Cummins example is 60 degrees (cited) although we don't know the crank layout and we can't cite any claim that (as appears likely) it was either developed from V6 or V12 engines, or is at least balanced as a series of V6s. I agree with your edit summary that 60 degrees is important to get the balance right if so.

The main problem is the Alco engine. This appears to have been developed from a V16. Now what does "developed" mean? It might mean a redesigned crankshaft with odd angles to it (a tooling cost for forging) but it would be unusual to change the block angle from the earlier engine (redesigning pretty much the whole engine). I wouldn't expect a V16 to ever use 60 degrees, so what would the V18 be?

Pending clarification of the Alco, I think we need a form of words here that describes the Cummins as a 60 bank angle (but doesn't make assumptions about the crank) and that also doesn't imply that all V18s would be balanced for this angle. Andy Dingley (talk) 09:40, 17 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
