Tech News: 2024-09
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- The mobile visual editor is now the default editor for users who never edited before, at a small group of wikis. Research shows that users using this editor are slightly more successful publishing the edits they started, and slightly less successful publishing non-reverted edits. Users who defined the wikitext editor as their default on desktop will get the wikitext editor on mobile for their first edit on mobile as well. [1]
- The mw.config value
wgGlobalGroups
now only contains groups that are active in the wiki. Scripts no longer have to check whether the group is active on the wiki via an API request. A code example of the above is:if (/globalgroupname/.test(mw.config.get("wgGlobalGroups")))
. [2]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 27 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 28 February. It will be on all wikis from 29 February (calendar). [3][4]
Future changes
- The right to change edit tags (
changetags
) will be removed from users in Wikimedia sites, keeping it by default for admins and bots only. Your community can ask to retain the old configuration on your wiki before this change happens. Please indicate in this ticket to keep it for your community before the end of March 2024.

Question from Muhammad Sarfaraz Khan on User:Muhammad Sarfaraz Khan (09:21, 27 February 2024)
How do I put logo and like the table --Muhammad Sarfaraz Khan (talk) 09:21, 27 February 2024 (UTC)
- Muhammad Sarfaraz Khan Good day and thank you for the questions. To uploaded logos in Wikipedia, first pls read Wikipedia:Logos as images do need to meet copyright rules. If the logo meets the copyright rules then it can be upload to Wikipedia Common - see [[5]] and click "Upload" on the top right corner and follow the instructions there on. I do not know what you meant by "like the table". If you want to insert a table then you can read Help:Introduction to tables with Wiki Markup/1 and Help:Table. Stay safe and best. WP:NPPS Request
Hello! I received an automated message on my talk page less than a week ago from a user that had included me on a mass message via the MediaWiki message delivery system to see if I'd be interested in joining NPP. After following the instructions of the message to read the tutorial page and guidelines for granting user rights, I went to the NPP permissions reviewer to attempt applying, but instead followed the link to the NPP training program project page. I have now reviewed all of the "Essential further reading" essays and policy pages. I started a discussion on the NPP Reviewers talk page earlier today to ask about the process that led to me to recommended to the project where I expressed doubt about whether I'd be right for the project, given that I tend to be more of an inclusionist. Nonetheless, I've decided to apply but I think I may need some training. I've been contributing to Wikipedia for years and I'm familiar with many policies even if I don't have their exact wording memorized, so I don't need complete training wheels. The WP:NPPS page said you had two open slots, so I figured I'd place a request with you first. -- CommonKnowledgeCreator (talk) 20:40, 28 February 2024 (UTC)
- CommonKnowledgeCreator Good day and thank you for interested in NPPS. To be a reviewer, it not about inclusionist or exclusionist, but accept or reject the new article based on Wikipedia guidelines. It is not right to include an article and place them in main space when it is not acceptable as it will be nominator for deletion in regardless now long the articles are in the main space. NPPS program is a very comprehensive program as it includes topics such as notability, sources, article title, content, catogories, tagging, copyright, NPOV, AfD, CSD, PROD and many other topics. For such, they program do require you to spend time on reading the material (guidelines) and working on assignments (understand the guidelines and how to apply them). Since you have been editing for sometime, you would find the material not that hard to understand as compared to some of editors who have much less edits then you. However, to say that, NPPS will provide you a lot of info that you are not aware of or how to apply them even you with your edits counts or the knowledge you have in the moment for for editors who just edit pages but not as the reviewer for the new page, certain guidelines and their applications are not concern of them and they dont usually know or apply them. There is no time line to complete the program, but most editor take 3 months to complete as every editor work on the program in their own free time and pace they like. Let me know if you still want to join the program after reading the info I provided above. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia talk 04:35, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
Let me know if you still want to join the program after reading the info I provided above.
I would still like to join the program, but I'm not sure which info you are referring to. -- CommonKnowledgeCreator (talk) 04:51, 29 February 2024 (UTC)- CommonKnowledgeCreator the info is the message I wrote to you especially about "they program do require you to spend time on reading the material (guidelines) and working on assignments (understand the guidelines and how to apply them)." You need to let the NPP permissions reviewer know that you are taking the NPPS program instead and cancel your NPP permissions reviewer request. Let me know when you have done that so I can set up the program for you. Cassiopeia talk 05:04, 29 February 2024 (UTC)

Question from Nusratzai09 (13:11, 1 March 2024)
How can I upload picture to article --Nusratzai09 (talk) 13:11, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
- Nusratzai09, Good day. Kindly read Wikipedia:Image use policy and the image/picture needs to meet the copyright policy Wikipedia:Copyrights. Recent changes
- The
Special:Book
page (as well as the associated "Create a book" functionality) provided by the old Collection extension has been removed from all Wikisource wikis, as it was broken. This does not affect the ability to download normal books, which is provided by the Wikisource extension. [6] - Wikitech now uses the next-generation Parsoid wikitext parser by default to generate all pages in the Talk namespace. Report any problems on the Known Issues discussion page. You can use the ParserMigration extension to control the use of Parsoid; see the ParserMigration help documentation for more details.
- Maintenance on etherpad is completed. If you encounter any issues, please indicate in this ticket.
- Gadgets allow interface admins to create custom features with CSS and JavaScript. The
Gadget

namespaces andgadgets-definition-edit
user right were reserved for an experiment in 2015, but were never used. These were visible on Special:Search and Special:ListGroupRights. The unused namespaces and user rights are now removed. No pages are moved, and no changes need to be made. [7] - A usability improvement to the "Add a citation" in Wikipedia workflow has been made, the insert button was moved to the popup header. [8]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 5 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 6 March. It will be on all wikis from 7 March (calendar). [9][10]
Future changes
- All wikis will be read-only for a few minutes on March 20. This is planned at 14:00 UTC. More information will be published in Tech News and will also be posted on individual wikis in the coming weeks. [11]
- The HTML markup of headings and section edit links will be changed later this year to improve accessibility. See Heading HTML changes for details. The new markup will be the same as in the new Parsoid wikitext parser. You can test your gadget or stylesheet with the new markup if you add
?useparsoid=1

Removing indefinite protection on Abdul-Kerim Edilov
Hi Cassiopeia,
It's been ages. I hope you are all well and in high spirits.
I'm reaching out to inquire if you could help by lifting the full protection currently applied to the Abdul-Kerim Edilov page. This protection was implemented in 2017, likely due to repeated efforts to recreate his article at that time. Given the significant developments since then, as detailed in my draft article at Draft:Abdul-Kerim Edilov, I believe there's a strong case for allowing a standalone article for him. The story of his rise and fall is pretty insane.
Cheers! nearlyevil665 07:31, 24 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Ricco Baroni and Nearlyevil665: Good day. Long time we havent communicated and I believe I find you well in life. I notice a reviewer have reviewed the draft and you have change some of the sources. I loop in user Ricco Baroni here as he is a mma editor and I believe he know Russian language and I hope he can help on sourcing. Pls note the following sources are not reliable - newlinesmag, kavkazr, sportpolitika, I am not sure this two gazeta and Caucasian Knot are reliable and lastly cant find this site - theins.info. In short, from my view, the articles do not have enough independent, reliable sources for it to be accepted in main page. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia talk 01:58, 25 February 2024 (UTC)
- I added an article from Le Temps - a highly reputable source -- discussing in depth his career and mysterious death. That, coupled with the Guardian coverage, as well as Novaya Gazeta, Radio Free Europe and Insider (which I believe to be one of the most reliable sources one could find in Russian media alongside Meduza), and the subject previously holding the position of Vice-Premier, makes me believe he is notable. Also note he is likely to have been a victim of a quiet purge by the Chechen regime, and the encyclopedia would likely benefit more than less by recording this. nearlyevil665 02:59, 25 February 2024 (UTC)

Question from IddyIggy (11:11, 6 March 2024)
Hello :) I'm quite new in Wiki editing and contribution. I did a translation of an English article to Polish, corrected bibliography links and did some language polishing but it still doesn't show in Polish Wiki. Help? :( --IddyIggy (talk) 11:11, 6 March 2024 (UTC)
- IddyIggy Good day. First of all it would be much easier for an editor to know which article you are talking about by providing them the URL or the article names. I believe you are talking about the article Yevgeny Domozhirov in English Wikipedia which you translated to Polish Wikipedia [here. The Polish Wikipedia article which you wrote/translated is in your Polish Wikipedia sandbox (like your own scrap book as a draft). This means the article is yet to be in Polish Wikipedia main space. For such the article can not be find in Polish Wikipedia or in Google search engine. I am not sure how Polish Wikipedia works as every different languauges Wikipedia have their own policies (most of them are the same but not all) so I dont know the exact way to get the article in your sandbox to be reviewed (not sure there is a process for new article to be reviewed in Polish Wikipedia) and place in Polish Wikipedia. However, I believe one of the Polish Wikipedia editor has given you a link to move the page to the Polish Wikipedia main space - see HERE". On behalf of Polish Wikipedia, I thank you for your contribution to Wikipedia project. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia talk 02:10, 7 March 2024 (UTC)
- 💜 Thank you, yes, yesterday I got a reply from a Polish editor and will try to fix the situation. Sorry for not providing the link - I was thinking about that, but didn't know the etiquette and didn't want to spam. Thanks for the reply! IddyIggy (talk) 07:14, 7 March 2024 (UTC)

Hello there. How do I create drop down sections for individuals for example when I want to add the Biography for a newly created page. --Maisiersellers (talk) 21:48, 6 March 2024 (UTC)
- Maisiersellers Good day. First all all due to you are a new editor, I suggest you to read WP:Your First Article to familiar yourself the notability guidelines for an article to be accepted in Wikipedia main space. Pls note that for a subject to be notable, the subject needs have significant coverage from indepdent, reliable sources (no social media/official website/unrelaible sites, any sources which are connected/affiliated with the subject) such as from the major newspapers and books where by the subject is talked about in depth and in length and not only passing mentioned for vrification. As for your question, I believe you are talking about sub sections of the article (see below) ===

Tech News: 2024-11
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 12 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 13 March. It will be on all wikis from 14 March (calendar). [12][13]
- After consulting with various communities, the line height of the text on the Minerva skin will be increased to its previous value of 1.65. Different options for typography can also be set using the options in the menu, as needed. [14]
- The active link color in Minerva will be changed to provide more consistency with our other platforms and best practices. [15]
- Structured data on Commons will no longer ask whether you want to leave the page without saving. This will prevent the “information you’ve entered may not be saved” popups from appearing when no information have been entered. It will also make file pages on Commons load faster in certain cases. However, the popups will be hidden even if information has indeed been entered. If you accidentally close the page before saving the structured data you entered, that data will be lost. [16]
Future changes
- All wikis will be read-only for a few minutes on March 20. This is planned at 14:00 UTC. More information will be published in Tech News and will also be posted on individual wikis in the coming weeks. [17][18]

Hi there, please can you help me? I need to rename my page User:Robhollo/sandbox I've looked at several online help articles and it tells me I have to move the page to rename it, but i cannot find the move button one the page - my layout is different and i can't figure out how to rename it. Please can you help me?
Rob --Robhollo (talk) 04:08, 14 March 2024 (UTC)
- Robhollo Good day. First of all you need to provide me either the URL or the Name of the page in Wikipedia for the ease to help you. Secondly, we do not remane our sandbox as sandbox is just a note book/scrape book/ draft book of yours in Wikipedia. Thirdly, you had move create the article "Mister Sleep (2024 Movie)"; however, I have move it to "Draft" space - see here Draft:Mister Sleep (2024 Movie) for the article does not meet the notability criteria. Pls note that to meet the notability requirements the subject (here the "Mister Sleep (2024 Movie)" needs to have significant coverage by independent, Reliable sources such as from the newspapers or the books where by the sources talk about the subject in length and in depth and not passing mentioned. I suggest you to read WP:Your Frist Article. (By the way IMBD is not a reliable nor independent source and we dont put external link in the body page. Once you have significant of independent, reliable sources for the above draft article, then submit the draft article for review. Cassiopeia talk 23:29, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
