License tagging for Image:PS3 Final Large.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:PS3 Final Large.jpg. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 08:04, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Image tagging

[edit]

G'day Dodgyc,

images belonging to Sony are clearly not released under the Creative Commons CC-BY licence, and yet you persist in uploading images that are copyright Sony "all rights reserved" and tagging them in this manner. Image tagging is our best way of ensuring that we do not use images we have no right to use, and using tags that are wildly inappropriate disrupts that process. If you insist on uploading images that do not belong to you, and using tags that claim rights you do not have, you will be blocked. fuddlemark (fuddle me!) 14:14, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The image of the new controller is (as far as I know) the only one we've got, and its use arguably conforms to American law and Wikipedia's principles on fair use. Its use is still not great, for two reasons: 1) "fair use" means we aren't really supposed to use an image, but American law says in certain circumstances we may, 2) it doesn't have what we call a "fair use rationale", which is an explanation of why fair use law applies to that image. However, the problem of dodgy images is too great at the moment to worry about it: at least it's correctly tagged, and used according (roughly) to policy.
With regards to images of the PS3 itself, no, regardless of the source, we cannot accept fair use images. Only images that are really under a CC-BY licence or something similar (such as Image:Sony PlayStation 3.jpg) can be used to illustrate the console itself. This is because we've already got an image of the console, and it's free — we don't have to rely on fair use as a defence against copyright theft — and on Wikipedia, once a free image has been found to illustrate something, we will not replace it with a fair use one. If you can find a definitely free image, feel free to replace the one we've got with that one instead ... but before you look, I suggest you read Creative Commons, GFDL, Fair use doctrine, and Copyright. Cheers, fuddlemark (fuddle me!) 16:30, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:PS3 Final Large.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me, or ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. — Rebelguys2 talk 16:07, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
