Short descriptions

[edit]

Hi Dylanlismore! Thank you for your short description contributions! However, your additions ([1][2][3][4][5]) were too long, so I had shortened them.

WP:SDSHORT suggests that short descriptions should be around 40 characters long and almost always less than 100 characters long, as they are intended to be used to quickly differentiate between similarly titled articles at a glance, in which case extremely long short descriptions would take too long to read and in some cases may be truncated by software.

Furthermore, your last addition ([6]) was to an article with a rather detailed title. WP:SDNONE suggests that in cases where the title provides enough information to tell it apart from other articles (a good indicator is when trying to come up with a short description, you find yourself simply repeating or rewording the title) the word "none" with lower case 'n' should be used as the short description, in which case the software would automatically display no short description while still adding it to Category:Articles with short description.

For more information, please read Wikipedia:Short description. Also consider joining WikiProject Short Descriptions, where editors are working hard to add short descriptions to all articles! I hope this explanation helps, and good luck with your future edits! Liu1126 (talk) 21:17, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

sorry I assumed due to the 250 charater limit I could use up to that Dylanlismore (talk) 21:33, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No worries! Wikipedia policies are quite expansive and convoluted (even I can't say I know all of them), and the Wikipedia:Suggestededit-add 1.0 feature you've been using has been criticised a lot for not giving new users enought information. Your new edits are much better in terms of length, but just as an additional note: short descriptions usually don't repeat information already given in the title (such as the name of the person, item, place, etc), as short descriptions should give extra information that's not already given, although you can do so if necessary for coherence. Keep editing! Liu1126 (talk) 21:55, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
