Hello, ErinCrisp.

Thanks for suggesting the biography Roy Johnston (artist). It might be suitable. I have copied your post into Draft:Roy Johnston (artist).

Q1. What is your connection to Roy Johnston? How do you know him? How do you come to be interested in him?
Q2. Have you ever edited Wikipedia before? Are you interested in continuing?

On Roy Johnston, you have given a bunch of facts. If he gets an article, these will go into the content. However, to see if he gets an article, we need to have some published commentary about him. Not the facts, but discussion of the facts. Qualitative. Adjectives. Is he good, bad, novel, mainstream?

I'd like to help.

Hello SmokeyJoe, Thankyou for considering my submission.

My connection to Roy Johnston is that I visited his Binding Connections exhibit in Cincinati and was very interested in his work. I do not have a personal connection to him, however I have seen his art in person and did like it. A few years later, when I was researching Roderic O'Conor for my Art History course and I stumbled across Roy Johnston's book O'Conor on amazon. After further looking into it, i saw he was the leading authority on O'Conor, This yet again peaked my interest in Roy Johnston and after reading about his extensive career i was surprised there was no Wikipedia article on him.

I had a Wikipedia account around 5 years ago and made small gramatical edits to various articles, however I have not created or requested an article before. I am not sure if editing regularly is something i would like to pursue, but if i find a hole in wikipedias library that i could help fill, id be more than willing to suggest an article again.

You asked about published commentary on Johnston, so here is everything i could find:

  1. This is a newspaper article written by Cyril Barret [1] (world renowed art critic)

https://search.proquest.com/openview/f37158eb20b9a397416a00dbfe342991/1?pq-origsite=gscholar&cbl=2026363

  1. I found a review of his binding connections exhibit, linked here:

http://aeqai.blogspot.com/2010/11/binding-connections-recent-drawings.html

  1. Roy Johnston is also briefly mentioned in paragraph 8 of this article

https://jeremyhendersonart.weebly.com/biography.html

  1. He has a page about three of his works that are currently on display in the Ulster Museum

https://artuk.org/discover/artists/johnston-roy-b-1936

  1. And this is his statement panel regarding his Binding Connections exhibit, he describes his view of his art and describes the genre he believes he fits into.

  • Hello Erin. Thanks for writing on my talk page. Some of the above references can be helpful in adding content to a Roy Johnston (artist) article, once one exists, but they are not enough to get him across the line. I could go into these references to explain why not, but it would be better to focus on what is needed, which is a published commentary that describes Roy Johnston, and not something that could be publicity for a showing of his work. I'm afraid that I have been unable to find anything myself. Possibly, there are non-indexed book that comment on him. Reviews are good, but feature stories are not. A review is from a distant perspective, mixes compliment with criticism, and importantly makes comparison with other artists.
In the absence of having sources that demonstrate notability (i.e. others publishing material on him), the best ting for you to do is to improve existing articles related or connected to him. He is an art critic? What are some topics that he has criticised? Do some work on those topics. Is he worth a mention, beyond being a reference, for any of these topics? Can you tell me any existing articles that interest you? --SmokeyJoe (talk) 06:40, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
