Just to explain why I reverted your caption on Henry Morgan, content on wikipedia has to reflect what is in reliable sources per our policy WP:RS. You may not add original content based on your own opinion. May I suggest you take some time to understand what is acceptable content on wikipedia. WCMemail13:23, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My changes were based on facts, and I included some primary sources. I believe the Calendar of State Papers, for example, to be a much more reliable source than the works of fiction currently cited. I also drew attention to secondary sources which themselves depend on an earlier flawed secondary source. This isn't a matter of opinion, it's a matter of mathematics: the secondary source 'Limbus Patrum' which most sources cite for the early life of Henry Morgan shows very clearly that Henry's supposed younger brother Thomas Morgan of Llangattock died in 1679 at the age of 73, meaning he was born c. 1676, while Henry was born c. 1635.
The secondary sources cited in your original article give THEIR OPINION that Henry was born in Llanrhymny or Pencarn: none of them cites primary sources for this and I would be very interested to see any that exist. As the (supposed) son of a younger son, what reason is there to believe that Henry would have been born in the ancestral home of Llanrhymney Hall? As for Pencarn, although there were Morgans living in the Pencarn area at approximately the right time, and it's interesting that Henry called one of his plantations Pencarn, there is currently (so far as I'm aware, and definitely not cited in your article) no definite evidence to say that Henry was born there, so this too is an opinion and should be deleted ! There were also Morgans living in most local villages and the towns of Newport and Cardiff, Henry could have been born in any one of them, or even somewhere else entirely.
Having checked your definition of 'original content', I can't see anything in your description of Henry Morgan's early years that isn't based on analysis of secondary sources...or even secondary analysis of secondary sources. On that basis, you should delete the lot! (which would at least have the advantage of accuracy over the current version). Ffiwsia (talk) 14:40, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You might want to read WP:PRIMARY, which is not to say primary sources are not to be used but we use WP:SECONDARY sources to interpret them. Wikipedia simply being an encyclopedia reflects what sources say and isn't a venue to present original research. Please recognise I'm trying to help you by pointing out to you how wikipedia works, I'm not really here for a long discussion on the particular topic. I spotted your commentary was personal opinion, it highlighted an issue with the image that I fixed but your commentary shouldn't have gone beyond what the source said. Thanks, I do know the difference between a primary and secondary source ! I think if the official calendar of state papers shows that William Morgan wrote to the Secretary of State acknowledging Henry Morgan as 'a relative and formerly a neighbour' , we can assume that to be a FACT. Many of the secondary sources referred to give their OPINION Henry was born at Llanrhymney or Pencarn with no evidence whatsoever beyond other (flawed) secondary sources.
I don't presume to lecture you on the difference, merely trying to explain to you how it works here. Verifiability not WP:TRUTH, if you're here to promote what you see as the truth, you're in the wrong place. Have your truth published in a historic journal, then we can reference it, till then facts are what secondary sources say they are. WCMemail15:17, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
as I said, you prefer twaddle to fact, but useful to have this confirmed! Please explain how you have verified that Morgan was born in either lLanrhymny or Pencarn as there is nothing in your article that does this. Ffiwsia (talk) 15:26, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
