Conflict of interest in Wikipedia[edit]

Hi Frannyapplebaum2017. I work on conflict of interest issues here in Wikipedia, along with my regular editing. Your edits to date and those of the IP whose edits you've said you made, have been promotional with regard to Cellectis. I'm giving you notice of our Conflict of Interest guideline and Terms of Use, and will have some comments and requests for you below.

Information icon Hello, Frannyapplebaum2017. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places, or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic, and it is important when editing Wikipedia articles that such connections be completely transparent. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, we ask that you please:

  • avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your family, friends, school, company, club, or organization, as well as any competing companies' projects or products;
  • instead, you are encouraged to propose changes on the Talk pages of affected article(s) (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or to the website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Please take a few moments to read and review Wikipedia's policies regarding conflicts of interest, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies.

Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you.

Comments and requests[edit]

Wikipedia is a widely-used reference work and managing conflict of interest is essential for ensuring the integrity of Wikipedia and retaining the public's trust in it. As in academia, COI is managed here in two steps - disclosure and a form of peer review. Please note that there is no bar to being part of the Wikipedia community if you want to be involved in articles where you have a conflict of interest; there are just some things we ask you to do (and if you are paid, some things you need to do).

Disclosure is the most important, and first, step. While I am not asking you to disclose your identity (anonymity is strictly protecting by our WP:OUTING policy) would you please disclose if you have some connection with Cellectis, directly or through a third party (e.g. a PR agency or the like), or via a stock position? You can answer how ever you wish (giving personally identifying information or not), but if there is a connection, please disclose it. After you respond (and you can just reply below), I can walk you through how the "peer review" part happens and then, if you like, I can provide you with some more general orientation as to how this place works. Please reply here, just below, to keep the discussion in one place. Thanks! Jytdog (talk) 07:17, 20 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Jytdog:,

I have no previous or existing connection with this industry or Cellectis whatsoever. I read an article about Cellectis on-line and wanted more information about the company, so I turned to Wikipedia, and saw an incredibly BAD article not at all worthy of a multi-million dollar company that is listed on the NASDAQ, and I thought, "This is my chance to "improve Wikipedia" through editing, since I am always using the website, now was my chance to give back. I read up a bit about how to edit and jumped right in. I admit that perhaps my first effort was overly ambitious, and maybe sounded promotional, but I did not expect to get completely shot down with insults and threats. I offered to work together, since I was taking an interest, and it seemed no one else cared if a big company like this had a tiny article with almost no information. I thought I would do the heavy lifting, and people like you would make corrections and give advice. I did not expect the "slash and burn" approach to editing, and the direct insults I was subjected to by you.

I state again that I am not affiliated at all with this company and do not get paid for editing. I am surprised you think so, since you think my edits are so "poorly written." I am about to embark on a three day hiatus from my computer, so if you answer this, I might not answer you for quite a while. After that, I am happy to be walked through "peer review" and to learn better how "this place works." Right now I feel it is a pretty hostile place to be. OK, thanks for explaining! I am sorry this has been unpleasant for you and that i have been part of that. Please understand that it is extremely common for company reps and people who want to see their stock holdings increase in value come to WP to pump up company articles and your edits looked like that. (if you do stick around and learn, you will end up seeing what i mean..) It is hard to write good Wikipedia content about biotech companies; if you are willing to learn i will be happy to collaborate with you to improve this one. My apologies again. Ping me at the talk page when you come back, if you like, and I will start walking you through a good process to generate good content that will stick. Hi @Jytdog: I am back, and want to say how happy I was to see your kind response. Please walk me through the process of getting this article (and hopefully other articles in Wikipedia) to be informative while adhering to the high standards set by experienced Wikipedia editors. I do have a question about a simple factual error that I tried to fix. In the source which has been accepted as legitimate by the editors, written by Phillip Hemme it is stated in the first paragraph that " ...in September 2007 to raise €21.2 million and to acquire...for €28 million..." Isn't that source good enough to change those figures in the Wiki article? Another question: In the same paragraph it says Cellectis has 300 employees (as of 2015). Isn't that enough to add that information to the infobox? I am ready for you to explain to me why the sources I used in my edits are unacceptable, and if you tell me what other information you think should be on this page, I will do the research, and will check with you first before adding anything new to the page. I am ready and looking forward to collaborating with you. Thanks again.Frannyapplebaum2017 (talk) 06:33, 24 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
