Speedy deletion nomination of Mary Custy
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Mary Custy, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which pages can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:
- It seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. (See section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.
- It appears to be about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), individual animal, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. (See section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) Such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. ―Susmuffin Talk 04:35, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
- Instead of deleting the page, I've moved it to Draft:Mary Custy. This will give you more, but not unlimited time to resolve the issues above.----Fabrictramp | talk to me 04:41, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
Mary Custy
[edit]Hi! I wanted to give some feedback to help explain why the article was nominated for deletion:
- This needs more sourcing to establish notability - there is only one source in the article and it's to Custy's own site, which means that it cannot establish notability. What is needed here is coverage in independent and reliable sources, like articles in newspapers or academic texts. Keep in mind that people aren't automatically notable, so we need to be able to establish how the individual is notable via this coverage.
- Be careful of tone. Some of the writing is kind of casual and some of the wording is of the type that you would see in promotional material. For example, the phrase "for ages five to eighty" is something that would be in marketing material. So I would re-write the career section like this:
- In 1983 Custy moved to Doolin, where she lived for six years and played with Eoin O'Neill. While living in Doolin, Custy joined her childhood friend Sharon Shannon's band. She played with the band for two years, during which time she traveled the world and performed with people such as Nancy Griffith in Scotland and Donal Lunny in the studio.
- In 1995 Custy began teaching group classes prior to teaching private lessons, eventually opening up her own school.
- This is more to to the point and eschews some of the marketing and casual speak that Custy uses in her own website - keep in mind, the goal of her website is to promote herself and her school, so it's not going to be neutral in tone. You can absolutely use this rephrasing if you like.
- This is relevant to the last point about tone, but be careful about little embellishments. Wikipedia tends to be more to the point and doesn't really use many of the little embellishments or flairs that would be seen in casual conversation or writing. For example, we can't write "Mary Custy was born in a little town called Toonagh in County Clare" because that can be seen as us adding a little bit of flair to heighten her rural origins. We can, however, write something like this:
- Mary Custy was born in Toonagh, a small town in County Clare, Ireland.
- It's one of those splitting hair words, to be honest - it's something that likely wouldn't be an issue anywhere else but in places like Wikipedia. It all depends on how something is phrased. If we write it like "little town called Toonagh" it could be seen as us playing up her origin but phrasing it the other way makes it more of a point of fact since the emphasis on the town's size is placed on the town itself rather than on Custy, if that makes sense. No worries if this all sounds incredibly nitpicky - it's something that honestly, is kind of unique to writing for Wikipedia and places like Wikipedia. I got caught on this as well when I first started writing.
I do think that Custy is most likely notable - it's probable that a lot of the coverage for her will probably be harder to find since her work was released pre-Internet or in the early days, prior to when everything was put online. You may have to look through some newspaper databases for reviews and coverage, but I do think it should be out there. Also, do you know the name of her band? It would be good to add that to the article. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:54, 18 February 2020 (UTC)
