August 2 deletions[edit]

Impressive work, in many cases correct, but I think you've overdone it a bit in a few cases. Specific examples such as Irina Voronina and Nikki Schieler Ziering: Where the person's entire article describes their becoming famous through being a Playboy model, displaying their Playboy cover seems like fair use. You're quite correct as to WP:FU. I believe, though, that it is met in these cases. In the case where the notability of the individual is mainly from the magazine appearance, most of the article can be seen as being commentary on the magazine appearance, which includes the cover photo. I did not change it, but there's no "citation needed" that the Baltimore Orioles play "Thank God I'm A Country Boy" at home games during the seventh inning stretch. It was even already noted on Orioles and Camden Yards pages.

Cover Deletions[edit]

I am trying to understand your motivations for deleting so many magazine covers. I would like to see the public have access to as many objects of culture as possible. As a law student at a top law school I think I can fairly claim that inclusion of magazine and comic book covers on Wikipedia is a fair use under federal copyright law. That this is a fair use is explained on the Rachel McAdams talk page and many other pages throughout Wikipedia that include such covers. Redkern 17:42, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As a new editor, I discovered while contributing to the fair use talk page that Wikipedia's policies are relatively conservative. I'm okay with abiding by Wikipedia's policy if they want to avoid postings of unnecessary magazine covers. I still believe that publishing magazine covers does not violate any copyrights or trademarks. I also understand now that there is significant debate and differences of opinion among Wikipedians as to what constitutes fair use. Jessica Hahn image[edit]

Please review the fair use tag attached to the image and the more extensive discussions at WP:FU and related pages. A passing reference to a magazine appearance is not sufficient under WP's fair use policy, even if its legaly fair use. I disagree because the image is used as the main illustration for the article & because it's not her famous Playboy appearance but a later one. It was national news the first time she was in it. Good point; we really should write about the one that made national news. She actually had 3 appearances. I've started listing some online references. Woody Allen[edit]

I've reinserted the image of the Life Magazine cover that you deleted. I have added a sentence that I believe provides the right context for using that image. Making the cover of Life in the 1960s is a pretty big deal and I feel that this supports the claim (made in the article) that he rapidly became popular around that time.
