Your contributed article, History of Online Poker

Hello, I notice that you recently created a new page, History of Online Poker. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as yourself. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page - Wikipedia:Summary style. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will to continue helping improve Wikipedia. Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but you removed a speedy deletion tag from History of Online Poker, a page you have created yourself. If you do not believe the page should be deleted, you can place a {{hangon}} tag on the page, under the existing speedy deletion tag (please do not remove the speedy deletion tag), and make your case on the page's talk page. Caught your question at the Help Desk

Hey, I noticed your question at the help desk. I thought I'd try to explain a bit more what's going wrong, and how you can fix it.

  • The article you have created, the History of Online Poker, has been deleted as it largely duplicates an article that already exists. In this case, Online poker already covers most of the information adequately, and in Wikipedia, there's little need for two articles that cover the same material. If you have something to add to the topic, it may be more appropriate to add it there (for example, under a "History" section). If needed, you could split the larger article (see Wikipedia:Summary style), which may be appropriate, rather than starting a new, mostly duplicate article.
  • Material written in the article space must be fully appropriate from the moment it is created. Wikipedia has other namespaces (see WP:NAMESPACE), for example, this is the User talk: namespace, used for conversing between Wikipedia users. You also have a User: namespace, where you can create a userpage, AND where you can create user subpages for the purpose of working on draft articles. See WP:SUBPAGE and WP:USERPAGE and especially Help:Userspace draft which will walk you through the basics. Also, if you use the Wikipedia:Article wizard to create your article, it gives you the option of creating a draft. Please do so if you want to create a new article. Creating a userspace draft gives you time to work on your article, as much more leeway is given to userspace drafts than is to "live" articles. Once the article is approrpiate, it can be moved to the article space.

I notice that you created Computer Viruses after receiving the above advice, and that the article (a) contained no content and (b) covered a topic that is already extensively covered on Wikipedia. Clearly, you are trying to learn the Wikipedia environment, and I applaud that. However, it is not appropriate to make test edits in the main article space. Your article should have been created in your own user space (at User:ID15SD44/Computer Viruses), where you would be free to work on it to your heart's desire (assuming it doesn't violate guidelines against such this as copyrights and attack pages). I hope this clears things up a bit.

Wikipedia is not for free hosting of whatever content people want. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. Your pages are being deleted because they are not appropriate content for an encyclopedia. If you want to edit here, that's great, but you need to learn more about what we do here first.
