[edit]
There have been two problems with this account: the account has been used for advertising or promotion, which is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia, and your username indicates that the account represents a business or other organisation or group or a web site, which is also against policy, as an account must be for just one person. Because of those problems, the account has been blocked indefinitely from editing.

If you intend to make useful contributions about some topic other than your business or organisation, you may request an unblock. To do so, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:CentralAuth to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy. Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In that reason, you must:

  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first. 331dot (talk) 20:04, 24 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Help understanding my block

[edit]

331dot, I'm trying to gear up to request that I be unblocked, and hoped you might help me better understand my problems. You mentioned two:

"The account has been used for advertising or promotion..." Was my link to the my own map app "Afghanistan District Maps" (on the Wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Districts_of_Afghanistan) prima facia evidence of self promotion? I'll cop to hoping that people would see my map app, but my driving motivation was to provide access to well supported, quality information, and I believe I delivered on that. Is that line of defense likely to have traction in an unblock request, or should I just commit to editing out references to my own work?

The second problem was "your username indicates that the account represents a business or other organisation or group or a web site." I'm a retiree working on my maps and on Wikipedia solo, as a hobby. What suggested otherwise to you? What might I do to avoid or disprove that appearance?

Thanks, in any case, for your work keeping Wikipedia credible and legit. That's what makes it worth posting to.

Please read the conflict of interest policy as to why it is problematic for you to post links about or edit about your app. It would be no different than a politician posting to their own article about themselves, or Ford Motor Company posting links to its website in articles about Ford vehicles. The username policy does not permit usernames to be that of any business, product(such as an app), or website; they must indicate that an individual is using this account. You do not need to use your real name, just something individualistic. 331dot (talk) 08:14, 25 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Unblock request

[edit]

{{unblock-spamun|InTheDetails123|I ask to be unblocked, please. I was blocked for two transgressions. I understand why, and will not be a repeat offender. The blocking editor cited my postings to the Afghanistan Districts page <ref>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Districts_of_Afghanistan</ref> for having "been used for advertising or promotion" and "your username indicates that the account represents a business or other organisation or group or a web site." (My Wikiname, MapSynch, is the same as the account name on my ESRI hosted map website). I did post to make Wiki users aware of my site, but hadn't realized I'd broken a rule, and felt I was doing Wiki users a service. (The site is the best and only reference on Afghan district mapping, and it's valuable*.) But I do understand the need for rules preventing self promotion. I will refrain from citing or otherwise promoting my own work in future. Giving me a new name should correct the second of my problems by making it different from the account name MapSynch on my website. (I had put a request in to change my name, after I was blocked, more than three months ago, but never heard anything back). I am an individual with no commercial involvement in the subject. I believe I have valuable contributions make in linking and documenting Afghan data sets. Thank you for considering this request and for your work on behalf of Wikipedia. (*Colin Cookman, a blogger with USIP, came across my map site - via Wikipedia - and tweeted this: Incredibly useful resource here on Afghanistan district boundaries, their changes over time, and how they sync across datasets (including CSO population estimates and RS/SIGAR control maps). I wish I knew how to more fully credit the (anonymous?) authors!) <ref>https://twitter.com/colincookman/status/1108734741950418944</ref> ___ --[[User:MapSynch|MapSynch]] ([[User talk:MapSynch#top|talk]]) 23:09, 5 June 2019 (UTC)}}

Thank you for that quick response! Sorry for the duplicate name. Instead of Avicen, please set my new name to InTheDetails123 --MapSynch (talk) 12:56, 6 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Requested username:

Request reason:

I am reposting my request to be unblocked and given a new name, after having been informed that the new name that I had chosen ("Avicen") was already used. I then asked for "InTheDetails123". That's where things stand now. I gave more detail in my original request, but my reason boils down to wanting to participate, as an individual, with a now clear understanding of the need to avoid self promotion. Thanks for your help with this. MapSynch (talk) 18:22, 11 June 2019 (UTC)

Decline reason:

Procedural decline only. This unblock request has been open for more than two weeks but has not proven sufficiently convincing for any reviewing administrator to take action. You are welcome to request a new block review if you substantially reword your request. Yamla (talk) 13:02, 2 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

Could I ask that you unblock me, please? I understand that Wikipedia needs to defend against people using it as free ad space for themselves, and I can see how I contravened that, and do I apologize. I promise to be sensitive to those concerns in future. I have already changed my name, which should help decouple my work on Wikipedia from the web maps I've done as "Mapsynch." Please bear in mind, too, that there was very little self promotion involved: a link to a set of reference maps under my Mapsynch pseudonym. It's not like I abused Wikipedia's trust for filthy lucre. I will confess to a small ego feed seeing my handle up there, but I don't deserve a life's sentence for it. _______ I don't know how to address the misconception that I am more than an individual. Check Google, maybe. Or consider that team of bad actors would simply have opened a new account from a different IP address. I've been a good, not for profit citizen, and posted well researched, well documented material to Wikipedia. No one has come along in the past year to gainsay anything I posted. Do give me another chance, please. Thanks, InTheDetails123 — Preceding unsigned comment added by InTheDetails123 (talkcontribs) 00:53, 12 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Please give us an idea of what kinds of edits you'd make if unblocked. Also, if you wanted to add a link to your own website, how would you do so in a way that's compliant with our guideline on managing a conflict of interest? NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 22:53, 16 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

response to NinjaRobotPirate

[edit]

Sure, thanks! My immediate impulse was to post svg's of current district boundaries to supplement the outdated ones currently offered. ____ Re. how I would stay compliant on self linking: Before I added a link to my own website, I would make sure that the material I was linking was germane and solid, and didn't have anything to do with me / friends / family. I would only do it if that I were a published expert in the field. (I can make that grand claim as relates to Afghan district cartography.) If I linked to my own material, I would acknowledge that, but in the end, I would just avoid linking to my own material. My website is easy to find. I've nothing to gain, and it would leave me vulnerable to being shut down again. Thanks for that link. I promise to be good.

It doesn't really matter how germane it is. Every spammer in the history of spamming has claimed that they were just telling people about a useful service/product/website, and that it was both relevant and on-topic. If you have a COI, you're supposed to follow these instructions. In particular, the third bullet recommends using {{Request edit}} on the article's talk page. There's also this advice on how not to be perceived as a spammer, which, again, recommends using the article's talk page to get consensus to add an external link to your own website.
