Guild of Copy Editors July 2016 News

Hello everyone, and welcome to the July 2016 GOCE newsletter.

June Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 12 through 18 June; the themes were video games and Asian geography. Of the 18 editors who signed up, 11 removed 47 articles from the backlog. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all editors who took part.

Coordinator elections: The second tranche of Guild coordinators for 2016, who will serve a six-month term until 23:59 UTC on 31 December, have been elected. Jonesey95 remains as your drama-free Lead Coordinator, and Corinne and Tdslk are your new assistant coordinators. For her long service to the Guild, Miniapolis has been enrolled in the GOCE Hall of Fame. Thanks to everyone who voted in the election; our next scheduled one occurs in December 2016. All Wikipedia editors in good standing are eligible; self-nominations are welcome and encouraged.

July Drive: Our month-long July Copy Editing Backlog Elimination Drive is now underway. Our aim is to remove articles tagged for copy-edit in April, May and June 2015, and to complete all requests on the GOCE Requests page from June 2016. The drive ends at 23:59 on 31 July 2016 (UTC).

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Jonesey95, Corinne and Tdlsk.

Philippines dispute

[edit]

Look2See1 and RioHondo, let's have a crack at resolving your dispute here. I'll limit you both to comments below 300 words each; no one wants to read walls of text. Dschslava Δx parlez moi 06:58, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

First, Oriental Mindoro and Occidental Mindoro are not on Mindanao. Second, Mindanao is not a Region of the Philippines despite the insistence of the obviously Not from around here. The user is also responsible for boxing the island groups under Regions which they are not. These island groups are not administrative divisions but of course the user knows better. I suggest reverting everything to where they were prior to his uninformed unilateral edits.--RioHondo (talk) 07:15, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
OMG. He reverted us again on Category:History of Oriental Mindoro and Category:History of Occidental Mindoro. He does not get it and i dont think he ever will.--RioHondo (talk) 08:34, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
This is not about the large island of Mindanao, but the entire Mindanao Islands Group, which includes Mindanao island, the Sulu Archipelago, and the other Category: Islands of Mindanao. The scope is one of the three Island groups of the Philippines.
Please stop speaking in an insulting manner about me RioHondo, your presumptions about my thoughts and intentions are absurd and disincline resolution. I am not uninformed, but differently informed. It's a big planet.
The wiki article Mindanao and Category:Mindanao fulfill multiple duties for: the island of Mindanao, the Mindanao islands group, and the Mindanao geographic region (casual but used abroad, & not as a designated Administrative Region) — in the southern Philippines.
I suggest no reversions, [Category:Topic by region name] is common around the world, such as Category:History of Siberia & Category:History of Southern California, with 'soft' boundary definitions. I suggest these island groups be used similarly. Thank you, Look2See1 t a l k → 09:11, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Again, Philippine regions are different from other definitions of regions. Until that is understood, there is nothing here to discuss.--RioHondo (talk) 09:41, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
RioHondo and Look2See1, please don't edit or revert each other while this attempt at moderation is underway. I have to run an errand right now; I'll be back in 2 hours, and then we can start in earnest. Dschslava Δx parlez moi 16:46, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

RioHondo and Look2See1, if we are to go by the article of Mindanao, the category Category:Mindanao refers only to the island of Mindanao proper. But since the Philippine government uses the name of Mindanao as an administrative division, this must also be reflected in the contents of the category. To avoid confusion, I suggest splitting the category somewhat like this, where there are subcategories. As for the colloquial use of Mindanao as a geographical region, I can find nothing to reflect that. Dschslava Δx parlez moi 19:52, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'd also like to urge both of you to keep your replies precise and concise. Dschslava Δx parlez moi 19:54, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. Umm where does it say that Mindanao is an administrative division? It has administrative divisions within it but it is not as a whole administered by one local government, it is a collection of several regional and provincial governments, like Great Britain in the British Isles or Honshu in the Japanese archipelago.--RioHondo (talk) 20:28, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
RioHondo, if you click on island groups in the lede, it'll take you there. Dschslava Δx parlez moi 03:03, 2 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It does not say they are administrative divisions. They are divisions yes, but only geographical divisions (will have to point this out in the article). Geographical divisions which are composed of administrative divisions grouped per region. For one, Mindanao, Luzon and the Visayas do not have capitals or seats of government with a governor/administrator. The regions and provinces are the administrative divisions within them, like Scotland, Wales and England are for the island of Great Britain.--RioHondo (talk) 03:21, 2 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
RioHondo, in any case, my subcategory proposal still stands. Dschslava Δx parlez moi 03:39, 2 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yup, thanks for your help in mediation. Actually, there is no problem here if we only follow the official definitions and government structure of the country to be consistent, accurate, precise, no WP:NPOV or WP:OR. This is afterall an online encyclopedia and we cant afford giving out wrong information/wrong impression that an island is a state/administrative region when it is not. Will create a separate History by island, and organize the categories further into regions and then provinces so that they are better understood.--RioHondo (talk) 03:51, 2 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Category:Histories of islands of the Philippines where each major island links to their regions, and then regions to provinces. This is how it is done, only thing is, it has become more complicated and harder to manage with the addition of extra layers. But will maintain them just the same for better understanding of Philippine subdivisions.--RioHondo (talk) 06:08, 2 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
RioHondo, we all must make sacrifices for posterity's sake. Dschslava Δx parlez moi 06:12, 2 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Dschslava, for the clean and simple solution. — Look2See1 t a l k → 04:56, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
