Welcome![edit]

Hello, Jcander7, and welcome to Wikipedia! My name is Ian and I work with Wiki Education; I help support students who are editing as part of a class assignment.

I hope you enjoy editing here. If you haven't already done so, please check out the student training library, which introduces you to editing and Wikipedia's core principles. You may also want to check out the Teahouse, a community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to helping new users. Below are some resources to help you get started editing.

Hi. It looks like your formatted your sandbox contribution as a header instead of normal text. You can change that using the drop-down menu to the top left of the editing window. You should add your citation as in in-line citation as described in this training slide. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:47, 30 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

July 2021[edit]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a message letting you know that one or more of your recent edits to History of cannabis have been undone by an automated computer program called ClueBot NG.

Thank you. ClueBot NG (talk) 18:01, 31 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Moving work live[edit]

Hi! Since it's the weekend Ian may not answer until Monday, so I wanted to help out some - to move your sandbox live you essentially have to cut and paste the content to the live article. Make sure that both your draft and the live article are in edit mode, otherwise not all of the code may copy correctly.

Here is some information about moving work live if it's a new article entirely. This one gives some step by step instruction (with pictures) of how to move to an existing article.

Now that said, I do have some notes for your draft, which I'll go over in a new section. ReaderofthePack(formerly Tokyogirl79) (。◕‿◕。) 03:01, 1 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Draft notes[edit]

Hi! Here are the promised notes:

My biggest concerns are that this is written like an answer to a question and relies on a single source.

The source looks to be a literature review, which makes it OK to use for health related content (as opposed to a paper that was about a single study). However when it comes to health/wellness/self related topics it's best to try to get a wider variety of sources.

With the response issue, what I mean by this is that it's written a bit like a thesis in that you're asking a question and answering it based upon your research. This is probably one of the things that most struggle with adapting to when it comes to writing for Wikipedia - it certainly was for me when I first started editing.

When writing you want to avoid using leading or persuasive words, as well as "if... then..." type statements. For example, the words "however" and "despite" come across as argumentative statements, like we're debating the initial claim. The word "revealed" can come across the same way, as it's implying that there's a truth that was concealed.

You also want to be careful of making absolute or vague statements. For example, the sentence "Documents show that cannabis helps those suffering with anxiety" can be seen as both an absolute and vague statement because it makes it seem like cannabis absolutely helps anxiety. It's also vague as to what these documents are and who is making the claims written on them. Now a way of resolving this would be to state something like this:

Studies have been conducted on the impact of cannabis on anxiety and proponents have made statements about its positive impact on those suffering from anxiety. In a 2020 literature review Lara Sharpe et al wrote that cannabis has the potential to trigger or exacerbate feelings of anxiety and other stressors. They furthermore commented that levels of comfortability and anxiety were directly correlated to the amount of exposure to the drug itself. The researchers also wrote that the drug affected each user differently and that more investigation was needed to support the studies' evidence.

This isn't the best way, but I think it does put more of the emphasis on it being what was in the source. Now that said, there is also another issue - where this will be placed on Wikipedia. Anxiety is more or less covered in the mental health section of the article on the long-term effects of cannabis. (The article has some issues with tone as well, I'll note.) If you wanted to create a section solely on the impact on anxiety by itself that's a possibility. If that's the case then you will need to take into account that you'll be building on what others have written - notably that you want to avoid restating what has already in the article. In other words, you won't have to set all of the groundwork you'll need for a new article. I'd also recommend making a quick post on the article's talk page to let the other editors know what you plan on adding, since the article does tend to be edited somewhat more frequently than others.

I hope that this wasn't too terribly long - Ian can add more to this later as well! ReaderofthePack(formerly Tokyogirl79) (。◕‿◕。) 03:33, 1 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
