Connection?

[edit]

Hi - I'm Girth Summit, and administrator here. I noticed that you have been contributing a number of articles about companies and people connected with Mystery Science. Can I ask whether you have any kind of connection to this company, or any of the people involved with it? Thanks GirthSummit (blether) 19:37, 27 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Girth! Do I reply to you by simply writing right here? I hope this works. I am a teacher who loves technology in general and edtech in particular. I'm a user and fan of the Mystery Science / Mystery Doug product, in addition to a variety of other technology tools and I'm interested in the people behind them.

I see that the Mystery Doug article wasn't complete enough. I got started with it but didn't put a lot of time into it yet so I probably shouldn't have published it. I didn't realize you could have things in a draft mode. Thanks for doing that!

I saw your feedback about the Doug Peltz article and I'm going to spend some more time on that and incorporate more and better source material. Thanks!

Jjwilliamson, hi - yes, you can reply like that, although it's easier if you ping me so I get a notification that you've replied. You can read more about that at WP:PING, but basically you just type u|GirthSummit inside a set of curly brackets in your message (you need to sign your post with four tildes to trigger the notification).
So, what interested me was the fact that you wrote up all of these articles - about the company, the YouTube channel, and Peltz himself, plus you edited the article about one of their investors. That's very similar to the type of activity we sometimes see from
editors who have been paid to write articles, or who are connected with the subjects. Editing like that isn't prohibited, but there are steps you have to take to declare your connection, which are outlined at COI and at WP:PAID. If you have no such connection, there isn't a problem.
Please do read those links I gave you - especially the stuff about sourcing, which is really what this all boils down to. GirthSummit (blether) 16:47, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
GirthSummit, got it, makes sense why you were asking! I promise I'm not being paid although that sure would be nice! :) Just a fan of edtech and tech. I made an improvement to that investor page only because I was googling who the guy was that was interviewing Doug. Since this was the first time I created a page I was clicking around to different pages to imitate the tone / style / sections and made some improvements along the way.
I read the links you provided, they were very helpful. I hope my improvements help address his notability. He really is a big deal, I'm amazed there isn't even more about him online! I think this speaks to a general under-appreciation of us teachers as professionals. The pure "business people" get all the coverage in media. Meanwhile this guy is one of the most popular teacher in the country with kids with millions of fans, but I think I found some good sources that showed it. Mystery Doug moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Mystery Doug, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. GirthSummit (blether) 19:41, 27 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A bit more on this - the sourcing needs to meet the standards described at WP:NCORP for this article. We don't host articles about commercial enterprises that aren't supported by reliable, secondary and independent sourcing. Thanks GirthSummit (blether) 19:44, 27 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
