[edit]

Information icon Hello, I'm Flat Out. I wanted to let you know that I removed one or more external links you added to the page Argania, because they seemed to be inappropriate for an encyclopedia. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page, or take a look at our guidelines about links. Thank you. Flat Out let's discuss it 04:28, 6 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Please do not add promotional material to Wikipedia, as you did to Argan oil. While objective prose about beliefs, products or services is acceptable, Wikipedia is not intended to be a vehicle for soapboxing, advertising or promotion. Thank you. Account blocked because of promotional use

[edit]
Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because it appears to be mainly intended for publicity and/or promotional purposes. If you intend to edit constructively in other topic areas, you may be granted the right to continue under a change of username. Please read the following carefully.
Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, website or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. The edits may have violated one or more of our rules on spamming, which include: adding inappropriate external links, posting advertisements and using Wikipedia for promotion. Wikipedia has many articles on companies, groups, and organizations, but such groups are generally discouraged from using Wikipedia to write about themselves. In addition, usernames like yours are disallowed under our username policy.

Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?

Probably not, although if you can demonstrate a pattern of future editing in strict accordance with our neutral point of view policy, you may be granted this right. See Wikipedia's FAQ for Organizations for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. Also, review the conflict of interest guidance to see the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, organization, or clients. If this does not fit in with your goals, then you will not be allowed to edit Wikipedia again.

What can I do now?

If you have no interest in writing about some other topic than your organization, group, company, or product, you may consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

If you do intend to make useful contributions here about some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

  • Add the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} on your user talk page.
  • Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:Listusers to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy.
  • Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
    • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
    • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} below, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first. Gogo Dodo (talk) 04:48, 6 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Your new name would be OK, but consider this: Here are a few key questions:

You are currently blocked because your username appears directly related to a company, group or product that you have been promoting, contrary to the username policy. Changing the username will not allow you to violate the 3 important principles above. Daniel Case (talk) 04:31, 7 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

I'm sorry if I have contravened the rules, our organisation has very good information about Argan oil and others, I was just trying to share that information. There is another website sharing their link on the Argan page http://arganoilcare.com/ are they not in the same category I have been banned for? I would appreciate it if you would reinstate my account and I will make sure to read the rules very carefully and abide by them. Thank you

Procedural decline; you must request a new username as you have done above. — Daniel Case (talk) 04:31, 7 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

I have read the relevant information and understand the 3 points mentioned above by Daniel Case (talk. I will not repeat my mistakes I have no intention of disrupting your great work here on Wikipedia. We do a lot of research for our website and books and could contribute valuable information here. I understand that this will have to be provided in a neutral manner - no promoting, conflict of interest etc. as per the regulations. One correction that needs to be made on the Argan page is this sentence "An early specimen was taken to Amsterdam where it was cultivated by Lady Beaufort at Badminton House in 1711" Badminton house is in Gloucestershire UK and is not related to Amsterdam, however this sentence has been spread around the Internet and appears on almost every Argan website. I mention this only to show an example of the contribution I can make here if allowed, and if not would you please make the appropriate edit to that page. I kindly request that you change my user name, unblock me and give me another chance. Thank you. P.S. Although my IP address is obviously showing Saudi Arabia, that is because I work here - I am not Saudi I am Australian. Thanks again.
Hello there, I'm sorry but I really don't understand what is going on here. I wholeheartedly admit I have made mistakes - firstly not reading the guidelines sent to me which I didn't see until after I was blocked. Second mistake, promoting my website which I didn't know was wrong - I admit I would have known had I read the guidelines in the first place) The mistakes are a result of ignorance on my part. 3rd mistake seems to be the way I have presented my case for unblocking - I see in the log this "Possible self promotion in userspace)" is that referring to my mention of website an books (here I've probably done it again now) and that message will show up in the log) Now while I understand that you must deal with a lot of spammers here, I'm not trying to do anything underhand - I also understand that you aren't in a position to know whether I'm genuine. I'm sure you deal with some outrageous cases and I don't blame your suspicion. I am at a loss to know how to convince you so I think the best is to delete my account and give up any idea of making contributions here, but I cant find how to do that. I just want this matter to be settled congenially. and without any black marks on my reputation. If you can let me know how to do that please. Marveloils (talk) 09:21, 7 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

On the basis of what you say, I willing to consider unblocking you. However, the one thing that gives me pause is this edit. It is essential to realise that Wikipedia's policy on promotional editing covers editing to promote anything, including ideas that you believe are beneficial, good causes, etc etc, and not only promotion for commercial gain. If you are unblocked, you must refrain not only from posting links to your website, but also from doing anything else to promote your cause. If you can indicate that you understand and accept that, then I will be willing to consider unblocking. (Thank you for pointing out the nonsense about Badminton being in Amsterdam. It dated from an edit made in 2009, where an editor made a change which he seems to have thought was a minor rewording, but which significantly changed the meaning. Commonly such mistakes are picked up and corrected quickly, but unfortunately sometimes, as in this case, they persist for years before anyone notices them and corrects them.) Hello, and thank you very much (talk) for your reply. I can assure you that I do now understand that there should be no promotional editing and what that entails. I was previously unaware of the regulations as I have mentioned, but they are now crystal clear. I assure you I will not post links to my website or promote our cause at all. If I am unblocked, do I need to delete this account (if so can someone advise me how) and make a new username as already requested? Thanks for your time and consideration.

Your account will not be deleted, it will actually be renamed. This means that any edits you made under this name will show up under the new name, and your user page and user talk page will be moved appropriately. Anon126 (talk - contribs) (not an administrator) 06:27, 19 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
