Project Proposal

I intend to create an article most likely to be titled, Youth Employment. In this article I will cover issues on youth employment. Such “issues” include programs that work toward increasing youth employment, the technical definition of unemployment and “qualification inflation” as described by Furlong in our class textbook. I also intend to have a section, if not multiple sections, within the article that will discuss the ramifications of youth unemployment. I will detail how these ramifications are not simply personal to those youth that are unemployed but also have an impact on society as a whole.

I’ve already discovered on article that may be of some worth for creating the article on Youth employment. This article is called “Youth Employment in a Globalizing World” by Katherine v. Gough, Thilde langevang and George Owusu from the InternatIonal Development PlannIng RevIew. While doing some searching for possible articles to use as research for my own article, Youth Employment, I came across articles that discussed the employment or unemployment of disabled youth. If these articles prove interesting and informative, I plan on using them to create a section within my own article that addresses these issues. I will also think about how I can integrate issue of male vs female employment/unemployment as well as important country specific information.

As I create the article I hope to link to any existing Wikipedia articles that can expand on particular issues or programs that I will mention in my article. I expect that in order to have an article of appropriate length I will have to link to many other Wikipedia articles to create the most complete discussion of Youth Employment and the topics and programs surrounding this topic. While creating my own article I hope to also build on these existing Wikipedia articles if the opportunity arises to do so, (I have previously listed some of these potential articles on my user page).

Hi, Kapplet! We talked about changing your work to editing the Youth unemployment page. I would love for you to create a proposal that reflects this and place it on your user page, editing out your old proposals and having an up to date presentation of what you're doing. What, specifically, can you tell us about the updates you plan to the youth unemployment article?

It's a good instinct to start listing articles and other readings (including our course materials) that you plan to use. I would recommend that you format these citations into a bibliography to help us know what the sources are and also get you ready for when you include them in the article.

Finally - Please work through the steps I mention on my September 26 post on our course talk page.

citing books is tricky!

Suggestions

Hello Kapplet,

First of all, its so exciting to know that i'm not the only English and SCS major! Moving on to your article, I found it very surprising there wasn't a youth unemployment page. I think it's about time Wikipedia has one. My suggestion to you in naming the page would be Youth Employment instead of Unemployment. It just feels a bit more hopeful and works to counteract youth's lower value in the work sphere. Start thinking about how you want to organize your article. Are you going to do it by country? region? year? Is there going to be a section that discusses the types of jobs youth are employed in? These are the types of questions you might want to begin asking. Good luck!

Kapplet,

Great ideas! I really like the questions you're planning on answering in the article. It's kind of a unique situation to be thinking in the opposite direction about the article-- finding out what you want to work on answering first. A difficulty in this is that it may be difficult to think of how you want to divide up the article. Sections are one of the best ways for readers of the article to figure out what it's about before they commit to reading the whole thing. I think this would be your next step before writing out the content of the article, figuring out where and how all your information can be organized. Looks good!
