I deleted your edit and, frankly, I am quite baffled as to what in the paragraph you think makes it sound like it "reads like detective fiction." The paragraph simply introduces, with clear and straightforward facts, a brief overview of the history of ASL. I have read detective stories and don't find any part of the paragraph to be in the least way similar. Perhaps you could explain exactly which part(s) of the paragraph sound like a detective story.
