Re: Bhunter1313's block

[edit]

I am glad to see that this annoying fellow has been blocked. Good riddance to bad rubbish. My question, sir, is, has his IP been blocked? Was a check user trace conducted to see if this is a sock puppet. In the rant he posted on his user page, he promised to make more accounts and continue vandalizing. I have no reason to doubt him. Thanks for your efforts. ---Charles 05:05, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

His IP has been autoblocked for 24 hours, but lacking checkuser access, I can't do anything else. However, you can request a checkuser at Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser. -- King of 05:07, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think that I shall do just that. Thanks. ---Charles 05:16, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As it turns out, a checkuser was not an option, since I have no evidence or even an inkling of his being a sockpuppet. ---Charles 14:33, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I did not vandalize Sega Genesis Collection, I tried to fix it.

[edit]

Read my post on the talk page, I was trying to fix it last night, not vandalize it. This article is still a vandalized version by someone else. This is the current text when you go to the article:

[edit] Notes The European version does not include Shadow Dancer. However, it does fix previous speed problems concerning Sonic the Hedgehog which plagued the game's original PAL Mega Drive incarnation and most home console emulations of the game.

This is the first time Golden Axe III is released in North America, Europe and Australia.

This collection marks the first appearance of the two Vectorman games on the PS2 in North America, since Sonic Gems Collection has remained unreleased Stateside on the console.

It is of note that the Streets of Rage trilogy is also absent from this collection in the wake of its removal from Western versions of Sonic Gems Collection.

Although mentioned in passing, the collection does not include the first Genesis Shinobi game, The Revenge of Shinobi, possibly due to copyright issues surrounding the inclusion of Spider-Man as a boss character at the end of Stage 6.

Similarly, this collection is the first release of Phantasy Star IV on a non-Sega console, as it has only been seen twice before -- on its native Genesis, and in the Phantasy Star Collection on the Sega Saturn (available only in Japan).

Whilst for the most part emulation of the games themselves have no defects, some people have noticed that sound emulation in some games is not exactly the same as their Genesis incarnations. Regularly noted examples is the "Spindash" sound in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 fading out in a peculiar way, sound effects in Sonic the Hedgehog sounding slightly off, as well as no change in tempo when obtaining Power Sneakers in either game, wrong/missing death screams in Golden Axe and the sequel, a bizarre sounding Star Handle noise in Ristar and the "Victory Theme" in Phantasy Star IV not stopping the battle music. It should also be noted that Golden Axe 3 suffers badly from poor sound emulation compared to all the other games.

The graphics in the PS2 version are upscaled from their native resolution with heavy anti-aliasing, giving some games a messy and blurry look with no option to turn this filtering off. Digital Eclipse, the developer of this compilation, is notorious for forcing filtering on all of their classic game ports and compilations. The Sega Ages compilations from Japan, many of which have Sega Mega Drive games, offer not only the option to turn filtering on or off, but also include the option to run the games in their native resolution; both options giving way to much cleaner and crisper graphics than this American compilation.

The products in the future have many difficulties about Midway Arcade Treasures 2, and Street Fighter Alpha was a perfectly anti-aliasing performance for playing on PS3.Midway games have returned to the Sega Ages compilation, during the creators for the rest of it and it took under their classical games ports on the force, but the only thing Sega Mega Drive games has offer party times in the nature revolution.

This is the ip address of the vandal that changed the Sega Genesis Collection article

67.87.69.5

Go through the old versions when it was correct and then the next one that is the current, vandalized version, it's that ip address that changed it and if you go to their user page and check their "contributions" they have vandalized many other articles as well.

Thanks,

I beg your pardon

[edit]

I don't particularly appreciate my judgement as to how long a block is appropriate being quite so casually overruled [1] [2]. I would appreciate an explanation. WjBscribe 22:54, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I was trying to block the user at the same time, and it gave me an "already blocked" screen. I think that from the user's contributions, they've had quite a lot of vandalism today, which deserves a longer block. -- King of 22:56, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree - blocks are not a punishment such that the level of vandalism equates to the time of block. The account has only edited today and only for a few hours. The WHOIS information is fairly inconclusive but suggests a dynamic IP. In my opinion 12 hours was appropriate (especially with account creation disabled). I think its easier if we assume that fellow admins have good reasons for their decisions calls and only substitute our prefered options following discussion with the other admin, or when they are not available. Converting PNG to SVG

[edit]

Hi, i noticed you have been updating the cetacean size comparisons i made to SVG on commons and thought i would look for a little help. I was going to do that a while ago but couldn't work out how to. I have all of the other pngs already on my computer (plus i will soon make the rest) so i was going to convert them to SVG soon myself. I have inkscape and have tried to convert to SVG but the files don't actually seem to hold any data. I am opening the png and then saving it as svg (i have also tried importing then saving as... too) but it doesn't work right. How do you convert them using inkscape? Chris_huhtalk 22:00, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Back almost a year ago, I had the same problem as you; I later asked User:Booyabazooka and found the answer. So here's how you do it:
  1. Open up your image in Inkscape. It may take a while, so be patient.
  2. Click on the image to select it.
  3. Click on "Path" on the toolbar at the top. A dropdown menu should appear, and click "Trace Bitmap..." A window entitled "Trace Bitmap (Shift+Alt+B)" should appear. If you're using version 0.44.1, select the option "Brightness." If you're using version 0.45.1, select the option "Brightness cutoff." (They're the same thing.) The "Threshold" at the right, which accepts values from 0 to 1, determines the darkness of the trace. The lower the number, the lighter your trace; the higher, the darker. For your cetaceans, I would recommend 0.9. The trace is not perfect, so you should always inspect it. If a part is too thin, increase the number to about 0.95. If two parts that are separate in the PNG (such as the mouth and the lower side) are joined together, lower the number by increments of 0.1 until they get separated.
I hope this'll answer your question. Feel free to ask me, Booyabazooka, or the Help Desk if you need any more help. -- King of 04:10, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, great thanks. Also does it make much difference saving as inkscape svg or plain? And is this the best way of doing it for a bunch of other files too which have colour etc. in(such as Image:Oceanic basin.svg, this was a png too and i tried to make it svg but it doesnt seem to work right)? Chris_huhtalk 09:20, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I would recommend Inkscape SVG for most images that you'd create. However, for small icons that are used in Wikipedia (like Image:Symbol support vote.svg) you should use plain to save space. For color images, there IS an option for color, but the trace often messes the images up. Therefore, you should create these manually by hand. If it has only one non-black color, should should trace Brightness and then change the fill by clicking on a different color at the bottom color selection toolbar. Note that Image:Oceanic basin.svg doesn't work because you simply opened the PNG and saved it without tracing, as you did before. -- King of 16:03, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

SVG typeface samples

[edit]

I know what the difference between an SVG and a PNG is. It was suggested to me over a year ago (Wikipedia_talk:Copyrights/Archive_6#SVG_and_fonts) that transmitting the vector shapes of a copyrighted typeface actually violates the copyright in the US. Therefore, PNG is always superior, from a copyright standpoint, to SVG when it comes to typeface samples. You see, with nearly every SVG image, there is no typeface information transmitted, just text which is rendered in a default face on the end user's computer. You can embed typefaces in SVGs, but wikipedia has disabled this feature on SVGs that are uploaded. So, the SVG typeface samples are images where the text has been converted to outlines, thus encoding a copyrightable (in the US) shape. Image:HFTtext.svg and Image:HFTtext.png are nearly identical and we only need one. Because of the copyright issue, the PNG is superior. So would you please reconsider and delete the SVG image? Thanks for your consideration.-Andrew c 20:51, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Typefaces are not copyrightable; both images are licensed under the GFDL. -- King of 04:47, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Also, it says in Hoefler Text that the Wikipedia logo uses that font. If the typeface were copyrighted, would the Wikipedia logo be infringing on that copyright? -- King of 04:57, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
SVG typeface samples (even comprehensive ones) can also be found at Wikimedia Commons, without problems, under a public domain license. --Kjoonlee 10:43, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The wikipedia logo is not an SVG image. The issue is that in the US, the vector information contained in both typeface files and SVG images that trace typefaces is copyrightable. If fonts aren't copyrightable, then why don't we just upload the font files directly to wikipedia's server for users to download? Please read the H&FJ End User License Agreement: (a) Image Files must feature fixed images of specific applications of the Typefaces rasterized in a pixel grid; (b) Image Files must not feature scalable or non-scalable outlines of the Typefaces, or permit the extraction or extrapolation of scalable or non-scalable outlines of the Typefaces; (c) Image Files must not permit the alteration of the text by any third party; (d) Image Files must not include more than 50% of the character set of any individual style of the Typefaces;. Clearly, putting their typeface in scalable vector format violates a, b, and c.-Andrew c 19:55, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

SVG vs PNG

[edit]

Hi, I think the PNG typeface sample for Hoefler Text is better at the moment, but not for the reason mentioned above. (I'm in favour of SVG.) The problem is, the PNG sample shows the "fl" ligature, fl, but the SVG doesn't. --Kjoonlee 10:46, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You can put the PNG back in the article if you want. However, there is no copyright violation or redundant image, so the SVG should not be deleted. -- King of 15:06, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

GAC backlog elimination drive

[edit]

This form message is being sent to you either due to your membership with WikiProject Good Articles and/or your inclusion on the Wikipedia:Good article candidates/List of reviewers. A new drive has been started requesting that all members review at least one article (or more, if you wish!) within the next two weeks at GAC to help in removing the large backlog. This message is being sent to all members, and even members who have been recently reviewing articles. There are almost 130 members in this project and about 180 articles that currently need to be reviewed. If each member helps to review just one or two articles, the majority of the backlog will be cleared. Since the potential amount of reviewers may significantly increase, please make sure to add :{{GAReview}} underneath the article you are reviewing to ensure that only one person is reviewing each article. Additionally, the GA criteria may have been modified since your last review, so look over the criteria again to help you to determine if a candidate is GA-worthy. If you have any questions about this drive or the review process, leave a message on the GAC talk page. --Nehrams2020 23:54, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Curious about AfD closure

[edit]

I see that you closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Friedman (unit) (2nd nomination) with the decision "no consensus", without an explanation of your rationale. I'm curious about this, because there were 11 "keep" or "keep and restore" votes to 2 deletes, which I would have expected to be judged a "keep", not a "no consensus". (In fact, I noticed this because Bryan Derksen changed your result announcement at Talk:Friedman (unit) to "keep".) I imagine your judgment may have been because the keeps included 4 "and restore" clauses. But this element strikes me as a content issue, not a deletion issue, and the "no consensus" label gives the ardent opponents of this article ammunition for a third AfD in the near future. Could you either (A) change your decision to say "keep" or (B) add an explanation of why you considered this to be a "no consensus", despite the overwhelming "keep" support? Thank you for your assistance. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 08:08, 28 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, there weren't even 2 deletes; the original AfD nominator was arguing for a merge himself. There was only a single delete and that user's argument IMO amounted to an elaborately worded take on WP:IDONTLIKEIT ("It's not a real unit of time, it's a term of political commentary"). I also am extremely puzzled by this take on the results. Bryan Derksen 15:45, 28 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There are a variety of arguments, no matter how small, showing a disagreement. From a numerical standpoint, out of the non-SPA "votes," there are 10 "keeps," 3 "merge/redirects," and 1 "delete." This is about 71%, which does not seem like consensus, especially when there are many viewpoints presented. Consensus is communal agreement, not majority rule. -- King of 03:52, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
