[edit]Hello, Kmorris66, and welcome to Wikipedia! My name is Shalor and I work with the Wiki Education Foundation; I help support students who are editing as part of a class assignment.
I hope you enjoy editing here. If you haven't already done so, please check out the student training library, which introduces you to editing and Wikipedia's core principles. Olive Oatman
[edit]Hi there. I saw that you did a lot of good work on Olive Oatman, but that is overshadowed by two cardinal issues of Wikipedia: the deletion of sources and the addition of original research. Those absolutely cannot stand, and so I only reverted the whole thing provisionally for you to fix it. When I saw that you're a student, I wanted to help and encourage you because I didn't mean to interfere with your academia. I don't know how it's possible that you deleted all those existing references and inline citations, but that should be easy for you to repair. And the WP:OR is where you directly stated that it was the Yavapai tribe whereas all sources and the rest of the article clearly say that nobody knows what tribe it was. They must be referred to with a neutral generalization like "the tribe". And finally, there is no need to force <br> in wikicode because just hitting [enter] for a carriage return is enough. Thank you for your otherwise very genuinely high quality contribution. — Smuckola(talk) 14:22, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- Hey, thank you! I think I messed up by copy/pasting from my Sandbox. I think that's where I lost the original citations. I will go back and make corrections. Thank you so much! I got kinda rushed and made mistakes. I'll also go back and integrate the reasoning that it is believed that the Yavapias are the most likely tribe to have originally taken Olive and Mary Ann--I thought that the geographicall indications that were mentioned in the introductory ould have been sufficient. I really apprecaite your feedback.Kmorris66 (talk) 14:55, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you so much also. If you're able to state the actual rationale for identifying the Yavapai tribe, that would be very interesting. I'm the perfect audience for something like that, because I'm not a historian and I'll never read a book about Olive. I only learned about her from Hell on Wheels. So I have no idea!
- I meant also to congratulate you on using a sandbox rather than making 999 unexplained edits like so many editors do. If I'm doing a big change like this, I either do it all at once with an elaborate step-by-step edit message or I do it in two steps -- depending on whether the preview diff looks like it'd be comprehensible to other people. I make sure to preview both the diff of wikicode and the entire rendered article, focusing on broken text and errors especially in citations. For some technical reason about Wikipedia's server software, we have to comment out our categories while using a sandbox so that the sandboxes don't get categorized.
- So yeah good job. If this was your first wikipedia contribution, you've done very well and on a uniquely deserving subject, and you are a model Wikipedian. — Smuckola(talk) 20:38, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
