December 2020[edit]

Information icon Hello, I'm Magnolia677. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, Hawley, Minnesota, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. You can have a look at the tutorial on citing sources. If you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. As well, the photos you uploaded are marked as copyrighted. Magnolia677 (talk) 21:11, 17 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Leetwice. The nature of your edits, such as the one you made to Hawley, Minnesota, gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially serious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to black-hat search-engine optimization.

Paid advocates are very strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists. If the article does not exist, paid advocates are extremely strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.

Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:Leetwice. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Leetwice|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. Per discussion on my talk page. Magnolia677 (talk) 21:52, 17 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm just trying to use an updated photo and make the page better. You've made this effort futile, and I now regret spending hours today trying to do my best to improve the city's image. Well done.

As previously advised, your edits, such as the edit you made to Hawley, Minnesota, give the impression you have a financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. You were asked to cease editing until you responded by either stating that you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits, or by complying with the mandatory requirements under the Wikimedia Terms of Use that you disclose your employer, client and affiliation. Again, you can post such a disclosure on your user page at User:Leetwice, and the template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Leetwice|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. Please respond before making any other edits to Wikipedia. Magnolia677 (talk) 11:50, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I work for the city of Hawley but attempting to edit this page was not directed by them nor part of any compensation I receive. I am merely someone with access to their photos who is trying to make our town's page better--the current Grain Elevator photo is years old, is currently vacant and in disrepair. I will attempt to post uncopyrighted photos to replace it and will do no editing to the copy on the page.

But you wrote here: "I am a contracted employee of the City of Hawley. I made edits today that were twice reversed to the page. All of the images added were contracted for and paid for by the City of Hawley. We have full permission to use them any way we please. Thank you for allowing these edits. Lee/City of Hawley (Leetwice)". Magnolia677 (talk) 21:15, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
