AfD of YUCC

[edit]

I want to post my answer to your questions here rather than at the AfD page so as not to clutter up that discussion. Most Wikipedia editors understand those terms, but since you do not, I will explain them here.

What exactly I'm talking about is that when the article was first posted, it was tagged for speedy deletion under the Wikipedia criteria for speedy deletion, criterion A7. I.e. that this group is not notable enough to deserve a Wikipedia article. That request for speedy deletion was removed by another Wikipedia editor using an anonymous IP (i.e. not signed in). Since the speedy deletion request was removed, Wikipedia policy calls for a "proposed deletion" (PROD) to be placed on the article if an editor still feels that the article should be deleted, so that is what I did. That proposed deletion notice was ALSO removed, so the Wikipedia policy calls for a request at Articles for deletion, to gain consensus among the Wikipedia community. That is what is happening now.

You claim that the YUCC is well-known enough among the UK University Kayaking community. That may or may not be true, but in order to be included in Wikipedia, a group or club must have been the subject of multiple, non-trivial, independent third party reports (i.e. news articles, journal articles, radio or TV coverage, etc). Short of that, the group cannot be considered NATIONALLY or INTERNATIONALLY notable (Wikipedia is a world-wide resource after all). If there are reliable, independent third party sources claiming otherwise (news reports, etc), then they should be cited in the article.

I hope I have clarified the discussion for you. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 15:03, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
