Enmanuel A. Cruz Sr In Progress

Enmanuel A. Cruz Sr. Born December 24th, 1967. at 6:36 am In the City of New York. son to parents Jaime R. Cruz Sr. and Adela E. Cespedes Cruz. Brother of 2 Jaime R. Cruz Jr. and Nelson I. Cruz. Being raised and brought up in New York City was never an easy task, to two immigrants who barely spoke the english language. thats why when it came time to put her 3 sons through school, my mother opted for bilingual. cause she new it would benefit us in our future to be able to speak two languages. and she was right. having the ease of speaking, writing, expressing, and talking both languages has always been a blessing in our home and family. But by todays standards some americans feel its best to speak only english. yet when they do business with other latin american cultures, they need our help or at least an american that some how can dominate the language. As for me my life has been a progress in the making. not only have I been there done that. but everyday I learn something new which makes it a work in progress. when I graduated high School back in 1985. I immediately decided to go to the work force, which in my opinion now, might have been a mistake. but non the less a learning experience. I went to work for a Dry Cleaning establishment, back in January of 1986. I remember cause my father also worked there as a presser, so it was easy for me to get a job as a counter person. It was a family owned establishment. the owner at the time was Mr. Maurice Holtzer. smart man and very hard worker. no nonsense type of person. you know the folks from back in the days. I never ever had a problem with him, but he was very firm on how he wanted things done his way. And today I understand why, and am very grateful for that experience. the business was held together for more than 40 years. of which I was there for 18 of them. once he decided to retire, the business was handed over to his son Steven, of which I worked for the 18 years as well. I started out as a counter person, moved up to assistant manager, then manager, to then eventually becoming owner, back in 2001. I thought wow im set for life. but unfortunately life dealt me some heavy cards, which i tried to sustain and win, but had no luck. On that fateful day September 11th, 2001. The Twin Towers of New York City were attacked. I remember this as clear as day. It was a beautiful morning yet it turned into a disastrous day to remember. After it was all said and done life went on. but for me it was difficult. 50% of my clientele worked in that area. to my amazement, It was difficult to keep the business afloat. I tried everything from specials, to allowing customers, to pay on a bi monthly rate, allowing them to stretch their money. even tried getting a bank loan to reinvest back into the business. but the store was not bringing in enough to account for a loan. so I had no choice but to sell the store. in order to pay of the mortgage that was on it. this was all done with the help of previous owner Steven Holtzer. which ironically now sells Insurance for a living. something I should of thought of for myself. But I moved on. I was difficult at first cause I had been in this business for 18 years, and to know have to start over again, and with a boss over my shoulder. I was not to happy. I collected unemployment for about 6 months. then went on to work for an auto parts company out in Long Island. I did it for about 3 months, It was OK, but then I had a person on my route that would steal some of the parts if I was not careful. plus it would come out of my pay if it was worth more than $50.00 . this guy was a real pain in the ass. I resigned . then it was out to Virginia to learn how to drive a bus for the Greyhound Company. It was 4 week process of which I only lasted 2. the trainers there were very hard and condescending . After that I landed a job at J.F.K. International Airport, working for a company that did support services for American Airlines. such as wheelchair attendants, Bag Runners, Ticket Checkers, Skycaps, Baggage Claim, Air Craft Cleaners. you name it we did it. I started out as a Supervisor. which was great, cause they saw I had previous experience in management. then after 1 year and 3 months I became Shift Manager. which came at a cost. not to many people were fond of me there, but I didn't care, I did what I had to do for me to advance. after about 3 years of being there, company policy was changing, and made it harder for for managers to handle business as well as employees more difficult. so again I made another life decision, and opted out of the company. So now at age 38, I have decided to join N.Y.P.D. in the TRAFFIC division. one of the most toughest jobs any New Yorker could ever do. Now im writing Tickets, getting into arguments with motorists, directing traffic in lousy weather you name it . but it has been all a part of life and life lessons. Now at age 43, I see things in a different perspective. Its not about what you did or what you are doing now. It's about did you learn anything from your experience. and what you can do to further yourself in life. Im Happy , Im grateful for what I have, and for what I will receive in the future. my family means more to me than before. The future does look bright and prosperous, and I will be a part of it GOD willing. On my spare time, I work with my brother who owns an Internet Radio Station. which has been a blessing in disguise. Im able to do something I didn't do before. do shows, interview guests, do song Parody's. and most importantly, have fun with it. I believe that we can control our destiny's. but at the same time feel that the good LORD has a big part in the decisions we make. so my dear friends make the best of it, and most importantly, learn from your life lessons.
