inappropriate editing

[edit]

Hi. You appear to be a new editor, and there are some practices that are followed in both science and Wikipedia that you need to be aware of before continuing with your present editing habits. (1) The taxobox format in Wikipedia ALWAYS uses an abbreviation of the genus name in the "species" section of the taxobox, (e.g. "G. regius" rather than "Goliathus regius"). The binomial is spelled out in full in the "binomial" field, NOT in the "species" field. (2) The "binomial" field only contains the binomial - genus and species - not subgeneric names. (3) please do not delete existing references, such as those containing distributional data, unless you are providing a reliable source that can replace it. (4) the ICZN Code, which governs scientific names, DOES NOT recognize "varieties" as part of scientific nomenclature, because they are below the rank of subspecies; these names do not have authorships, or any existence under modern scientific practice, following Article 45.5 of the Code, which specifies "45.5. Infrasubspecific names - A name expressly proposed to denote an infrasubspecific entity (see Glossary) is not an available name unless the provisions of Article 45.6 specify otherwise; it is excluded from the species group and is not regulated by the Code [Art. 1.3.4]. A fourth name published as an addition to a trinomen automatically denotes an infrasubspecific entity (however an interpolated species-group name [Art. 6.2] is not regarded as an addition to a trinomen)." These names are not accepted and cannot be included in Wikipedia. I am a Commissioner of the ICZN, I can help clarify this if you need assistance. In the meantime, some of your edits have been reverted to restore them to the proper format for Wikipedia. Dyanega (talk) 20:42, 21 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

In case you have not seen it, I will point you to this article which shows how a taxobox works. You will note that the species name, as I stated above, is always given with an abbreviation of the genus name, while the binomial is spelled out in full.
