Images

Wikipedia can only accept images uploaded under a free license (generally GFDL or PD) or under a specific fair use claim. I have marked the images you have uploaded as lackign source or copyright information. Please see Wikipedia:Image use policy for the official policy on image use. Unless you created an image yourself and release it under the GFDl (or similar) an image is likely copyrighted. Any images for which the author died more than 70 years ago will be in the public domain, and you might find images explicitly stating they are allowed for any purpose. All images and text produced by the US federal government is automaticaly in the public domain (this is quite a large source of free images open to us). If you want to use images that are copyrighted on wikipedia you must be able to claim Fair use. Some information on adding fair use claims is available at Wikipedia:Fair_use#Images and Wikipedia:Image copyright tags. If you do not want to get involved in the fiddly bits of copyright rules, then you can just ignore the images you have uploaded and they will automatically be removed. --Martyman-(talk) 03:24, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

If you have not created the image yourself then you need to indicate why we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies under Wikipedia's fair use guidelines, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator.

Copyrights

All image son wikipedia must have a source (ie. where you got hte image and prefereably who made it) and a copyright license tag, it should also be easy to verify the copyrigth from the source information. The specific image you are referening to of Aaron Copland was deleted because it did not have a copyright tag on it. Copyright tags are either added by selecting the appropriate tag at the upload stage or by adding the correct template from the list found at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags.

An image being found in The Library of Congress is not a gaurantee that the work is in the public domain. In fact the image you are refering to at http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/S?ammem/coplandbib:@field(NUMBER+@od1(copland+phot0038))) clearly states that the image is copyrighted to "Mary Leipziger, 1226 S. Hi Point Street, Los Angeles, CA 90035". Copyirghted images that are not released under a free license (such as the GFDL) can only be used on wikipedia under the US government's fair use rules. All images uploaded as fair use must be tagged as such and include a fair use rational (See: Wikipedia:Image description_page#Fair use rationale). This is getting into fiddly copyright law issues and most copyrighted images would not be appropriate to use under fair use, but if an appropriate fair use claim was written for the image you are asking about it would arguably pass as fair use. You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
