Information icon Thanks for contributing to the article James Coates (British Army officer). However, one of Wikipedia's core policies is that contributions must be verifiable through reliable sources, preferably using inline citations. Please help by adding more sources to the article you edited, and/or by clarifying how the sources already given support the claims (see here for how to do inline referencing). If you need further help, you can look at Help:Menu/Editing Wikipedia, or ask at the Teahouse, or just ask me. Thank you. Dormskirk (talk) 15:49, 6 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dormskirk,
I have been researching my family tree, this information I extracted from General James Coates (https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/ce4e19eb-5d40-4492-9cff-f92fd6c1f09d) and Henry Coates (his brother) wills which I got using ancestry. I also has his son's will "James Richard Coates" (https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D220040) and his illegitimate son's (William Henry Coates) baptism certificate.
I also have General James Coates baptism certificate referencing Rev John Coates his father. Pjawelsh (talk) 17:12, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi - If you think these sources are reliable, please go ahead and add the details of the subject's parents, wife and children, using inline citations (see WP:CITE on how to do this). Thanks, Dormskirk (talk) 17:25, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Can you take another look to make sure what I have done is ok. Thanks Pjawelsh (talk) 18:26, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi - Looks good to me. My only concern would be your use of Ancestry which is not normally considered by wikipedia to be a reliable source because it is a user generated source. Dormskirk (talk) 18:36, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
ok - I will remove this. Pjawelsh (talk) 18:43, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but we need to remove the text as well if it is not supported by a reliable reference. Dormskirk (talk) 18:52, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have added a new reference to support the same information Pjawelsh (talk) 19:12, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
OK. Thanks. Dormskirk (talk) 20:53, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
