You seem not to have grasped the point that Wikipedia is not a social network site, or a place to post a self-promotional page. Since you have been using this talk page to re-post the page which was deleted, your ability to edit this talk page has been removed for the duration of the block. When the block expires, a little over 24 hours from now, you are welcome to make constructive contributions to building the encyclopaedia. If, however, you continue to use Wikipedia mainly to post self-promotional material, you are likely to be blocked for a longer period: perhaps indefinitely. James, I would like to point out that before your post above, neither you nor Harry (nor anyone else) has tried to communicate to this user that Wikipedia not a social networking site. As you are undoubtedly aware, the notion that Wikipedia is another social networking site is a very common misconception with new users. I guess you are right about that one mention, but although we tell Ruturaj Prajapati that Wikipedia is not a social networking site, we don’t tell him what the difference is.

Think about it from the point of view of a newcomer: A newcomer thinks of a social networking site as a place where you get all your friends to sign up and where you exchange personal messages with them. Although we don’t do that on Wikipedia, this is not what we mean when we say that Wikipedia is not a social networking site. We mean instead that you don’t have a right here to create a personal profile, where you control the content.

A newcomer coming from a social networking background sees that we have biographies and user pages and assumes that these are the Wikipedia equivalent of the personal profiles they are familiar with. When someone modifies their biography or user page or tags it for deletion, the newcomer assumes that their profile is being vandalized.

We are effectively expecting a newcomer from a different web culture to understand the Wikipedia culture without telling him the rules of our culture.

Nobody is pointing Ruturaj Prajapati to the guidelines for user pages, where it says that although by custom you are given great latitude in managing your user page, you do not “own” it and must use it reasonably and within guidelines.
Although you threatened him not you remove the {{userpage}} tag, you didn’t point him to the user space guideline that user pages should not simulate articles, which was the basis for your insistance.
Although you told him that you thought his user page was exclusively promotional, until your recent post at WT:CSD not even I could tell that your main objection seems to be to his use of the word “politician.”

My main objection is that it is a vanity page, one of two related to this user (the other apparently being his father). I have no doubt that we are dealing with an aspiring politician (but it could be a musician, a writer or a businessperson for example) who feels that having an article on Wikipedia will give him credibility and status. He is not unique in this. I was not the first to warn him [2], and I pointed him to the autobiography policy [3]. Also the {{userpage}} links to the user space guidelines so he had been pointed there. Part of the problem is he keeps blanking his TP so it is unclear what warnings have been given. So I have dealt with it as I would anyone else who created a vanity page. It's a judgement call but I felt he knew exactly what he was doing. Harry the Dog WOOF 10:12, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There are so many things wrong with TEB728's post. The main thing, though, is that there had been numerous messages explaining that self-promotional pages were unacceptable. Many of those messages were not phrased in the way that I would have phrased them, and I agree that more could have been done to try to help the user understand more clearly what the problems were, but we were long past the stage where we might have been dealing with a user who did not realise that using Wikipedia to post a self-promotional page was acceptable. I am sorry that you are having a frustrating experience trying to create a page about yourself. And I hope that when your block expires, you will not let your disappointment deter you from contributing to other pages on Wikipedia. You may be confusing Wikipedia with some other websites (like Facebook) that encourage users to create a personal profile, where they can write almost anything they want about themselves. Wikipedia is not like that.

Wikipedia allows a logged-in user to create a “user page” and gives him/her fairly wide latitude in the content of their user page. But they do not own their user page; like all pages the content is subject to policies, content guidelines, and community consensus. Please see Wikipedia:User pages for the content guideline for user pages. You are generally allowed to put basic information about yourself focused your Wikimedia-related activities. For example, you might write, “I am from India and am interested in writing about Indian politics.” On the other hand, the guideline discourages you from including excessive personal information unrelated to Wikipedia. (See WP:USERBIO.) I think your user page may have violated this guideline. In addition, many people disapprove of user pages that pretend to be articles. If you had been willing to accept the {{user page}} tag on your user page, it would have helped clarify that it was not an article and might have saved the page from deletion.

I recommend that if you create another user page that you write in the first person (“I am” not “Ruturaj Prajapati is”). This would remove any mistaken impression that your user page is pretending to be an article. I also recommend that you emphasize your past contributions to Wikipedia (like Bharatsinh Solanki and Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia) and your plans for future contributions. This would remove the impression that you are here only to publicize yourself.

Another comment: If you create another user page, I suggest that you do not label yourself as a “politician.” In English the word politician is typically understood to mean someone who holds political office or a leadership role in a political party. As far as I can tell, you hold neither yet. Just being a member of the INC and its youth and student wings does not make you special, for they welcome all interested Indians as members. Use your time and energies elsewhere[edit]

I really suggest that you stop wasting your time trying to promote yourself on Wikipedia. As an aspiring politician I am assuming that you are smart enough to understand that Wikipedia is not a site like Facebook or Myspace etc. where you can create a profile and say basically what you want. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and as such it contains articles about notable people, things, places, events etc. It is not here for people to promote themselves. I am sure you understand this, and also that any continued attemps to promote yourself will be prevented. So stop wasting your time and move on to more constructive things.
