I am going to back out the changes you made to this article, and I don't want you to see this as negative in any way. Two reasons:

  • The change says he is a "Chieftain of the Nigerian Ruling Peoples Democratic Party". That may very well be true, but the cited source does not say it. With biographies of living people, it is essential that every assertion about the person is backed up by a reliable independent source. If you can find a source that describes him as a PDP chieftain, there is no problem putting that into the article, citing the source. But with your change, the article implies that ThisDay has called him a PDP chieftain, when in fact they did not. There are legal issues. The article has to be strictly a summary of what is said in the cited sources, nothing more.
  • The other reason is more subtle. It is wrong to say "is currently minister since ...". The right way to put it is "was appointed minister on ...". The reason is that articles may not be updated as changes occur from day to day. "Is currently" may become incorrect if nobody changes the article for a while. You should write the article thinking that you are speaking to a reader in some distant country who will see it ten years from now, and assume the article has not been changed in the meantime. The basic rule is never use the word "is" when writing about a living person.

Again, I don't want to be at all discouraging. It takes a while to get a feel for all the many rules - I am still learning. Aymatth2 (talk) 01:24, 22 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
