Mango
[edit]Hi there, this message was sent with regards to your recent edit of inserting various texts to the mentioned article. This article is in the English Wikipedia, hence not needing all the various Indian scripts next to the English name. The main reason these scripts are often inserted is to signify the original spelling of the term from the language it derives from. For that, there's already an etymology section in the article which shows the three possible languages the English term 'Mango' may have derived from. While it would be perfectly fine to include the native scripts next to the original terms in that section (as done to 'Mangai' in Tamil), I feel it's inappropriate to have scripts of various languages next to the English term. It has to be noted that the term 'Mango' is not used in those languages you've added as a way to describe the fruit. English Wikipedians who may wanna read the article in other languages may select one from the language box on the left of the article, which redirects them to the article in that language. I hope you understand my point. Thanks and have a nice day S3000 ☎ 15:22, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
- Mango is not only a part of Indian culture, but also a part of Thai, Indonesian and Malay culture, to name a few. If we are going to continue, we'd have to write a whole list of names! In fact even in India there are 22 scheduled languages (besides the hundreds of others). Again that doesn't mean we should insert the names in all of those languages. Yes, while the objective of Wikipedia is to make knowledge available to everyone, there should be a limit. If such is the case people from all over will start inserting their native languages using that same argument -for every single article! That's why there are Wikipedias in various languages!
- It is simple. The term 'Mango' itself is an English word that is derived from one of those terms stated in the etymology.
- Such being the case, the native languages should only be inserted opposite the original term, e.g. the word may be derived from Tamil: Mangai (மாங்கை). This is because the term Mango itself isn't an Indian word, having no reason to include an Indian script.
- On your argument on Chinese articles, I usually observe the Chinese script next to Chinese names. There are some cases however where Chinese characters are inserted opposite English words. The argument that's most commonly used is that that subject is a solely Chinese matter, i.e. used to represent only China. However, we cannot solely associate Mango with India what-so-ever! I'm not saying that all Wikipedia articles are perfect, and thats why we are here to help improve it. I don't handle Chinese related subjects however to correct them even if there's any problems.
- On the 'Tea' page, I notice that most languages only use a derivative of either the pronunciation 'Ti' or 'Chai' (one originated from China, the other from India, the two regions that tea most probably originated from), making it practical to form a table on its etymology. And moving closer, those spellings are again not stated next to the main English spelling, but in a separate table in the 'etymology' section.
- I guess people seeking more knowledge on how the term Mango looks in other languages (as I mentioned above) may wanna use the links to pages in other languages on the left side of the article page. English Wikipedia may be their wrong click if they are seeking to see how Mango is spelt in Bengali.
- Thanks. S3000 ☎ 18:37, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:He Mele No Lilo.ogg)
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:He Mele No Lilo.ogg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
