Cyprus economy
[edit]Hi! Thanks for your message. The reference that I used was the IMF World Economic Outlook of October 2007, whose statistics are replicated at List of countries by GDP (PPP) per capita. The 2006 list puts Cyprus' GDP per capita at $29,870. The EU average GDP for that period was $28,213 according to European Union (also based on IMF data). And indeed, the Big Four are Germany, France, Italy and the UK. I think the main point of my insertion was to show that Cyprus (for the first time) actually has an income level higher than the EU average, which hasn't historically been the case. Indeed (and this fact could also be noted), it is the first New Member State to have "converged fully", to the extent where it has reached EU average. Thanks, Ronline ✉ 03:18, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
RE: Cyprus
[edit]Acknowledged -- I find your reasoning equally disagreeable. I hardly see how 'Eurasian' is unclear: awhile back, it was added to the introduction to assuage editors who couldn't agree on whether the island country is a part of Asia (since it is closest to Turkey) and or Europe (given its membership in the EU and other societal underpinnings). Its inclusion in the Middle East is certainly debatable. Similarly, there is no need to list all the countries in proximity to Cyprus, since the relevant section and subarticle already do that. However, there is a need to iterate major points, including its size and general location. Yes: the introduction has undergone some tweaks over time, but the notions I have restored are both long-standing ones (and thus consensual) and unequivocal. In my opinion, the current edition is summative regarding the country's location, whereas the prior edition (listing the entire kit-and-kabootle upfront) is inconsistent with summary style and unnecessary for an article that is already too long. Thanks. Corticopia 05:02, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
- Just one point - restoring Turkey as the only geo reference point for Cyprus is, unintentionally, an unfortunate political move. Can we not all keep to "eastern Mediterranean"? Vizjim 05:48, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
- Possibly, but it is a truism. This did exist previously for some time without barely a peep. In fact, its omission as such -- and hence no other link to Turkey in the introduction as a result -- has the unfortunate effect of seeming just as 'political'. Corticopia 10:31, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
