October 2013[edit]

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to IronFX may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

Iron FX article and conflict of interest[edit]

Hi IronFX, I appreciate your edits to wikipedia and particularly the article about IronFX, however your username and the content you are adding leads me to believe you may have a conflict of interest. I have removed the awards section again as it adds nothing useful to the article as these are low qualify and not encyclopedic and conflict with WP:Neutral point of view. Wikipedia has a number of guidelines and I would particularly recommend that you check WP:CONFLICT. Sargdub (talk) 19:59, 11 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because it appears to be mainly intended for publicity and/or promotional purposes. If you intend to edit constructively in other topic areas, you may be granted the right to continue under a change of username. Please read the following carefully.
Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, website or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. The edits may have violated one or more of our rules on spamming, which include: adding inappropriate external links, posting advertisements and using Wikipedia for promotion. Wikipedia has many articles on companies, groups, and organizations, but such groups are generally discouraged from using Wikipedia to write about themselves. In addition, usernames like yours are disallowed under our username policy.

Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?

Probably not, although if you can demonstrate a pattern of future editing in strict accordance with our neutral point of view policy, you may be granted this right. See Wikipedia's FAQ for Organizations for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. Also, review the conflict of interest guidance to see the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, organization, or clients. If this does not fit in with your goals, then you will not be allowed to edit Wikipedia again.

What can I do now?

If you have no interest in writing about some other topic than your organization, group, company, or product, you may consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

If you do intend to make useful contributions here about some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

  • Add the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} on your user talk page.
  • Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:Listusers to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy.
  • Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
    • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
    • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} below, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first. SmartSE (talk) 14:14, 19 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

Hi all contributors, IronFX wiki is the official account of IronFX Global on Wikipedia. We do have a COI with this subject matter and are willing to disclose that information based on current rules. We never aimed to avoid these rules, when we registered we didn't realize the significance of them and felt the username would have been a sufficient declaration. Therefore I would like to formally request that we are unblocked. IronFX wiki (talk) 16:26, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

I don't think you understand. There are no 'official' accounts for organisations on the English language Wikipedia (unlike on the German WP where they are permitted subject to conditions). Accounts here are for individuals only, and user names must not appear to represent organisations. There is also no 'we' in editing. If more than one person is going to edit, they must have their own account. This account can only be unblocked for a name change request, and this will only happen when a reviewing admin is sure that you understand how things work. I would advise reading WP:CORP and WP:RS as, at a quick look, I am not sure that the company is notable (by our definition) for an article. RS is reliable independent sources - amongst which registers, press releases (either direct, quoted, or in the form of 'interviews' that are obviously set pieces) are not included. If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

This user's request to be unblocked to request a change in username has been reviewed by an administrator, who accepted the request.

Requested username:

Request reason:

Thanks for your prompt response and the feedback. I have suggested a username that should hopefully be okay. As previously mentioned it was an error of judgement on my part, when using an obvious username, which was thought to be okay for the conflict of interest. The account will only be used by myself, and I hope to assist you with your discussions about IronFX. I was unsure how to respond to the unblock request, hence the use of 'we'. I didn't want to look like it was merely me acting alone, and that the business agreed with my decision regarding the COI. In regards to the notability, I understand that this is a complex subject, but feel I could definitely provide some positive input for you to make an accurate decision.

Accept reason:

Allowing username change to requested username. Please put this request in at Wikipedia:Changing username as soon as possible to avoid re-blocking. Daniel Case (talk) 14:04, 14 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Here are a few key questions:

You are currently blocked because your username appears directly related to a company, group or product that you have been promoting, contrary to the username policy. Changing the username will not allow you to violate the 3 important principles above. Daniel Case (talk) 23:36, 12 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the response Daniel Case, I've answered the questions below.

  • Do you understand that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and not a business directory?

After a lot of research, I understand that the encyclopedia must remain neutral and only contain notable information. I've studied different business articles to help my understanding, and have looked at articles with varying quality, according to the 'WikiProjects Business' article classes.

  • Do you understand conflict of interest?

Yes I can say this is where most of my research time has been spent. I've looked at how companies such as BP have assisted in correcting or expanding points on the Wikipedia article about them. I would look to follow a similar method, to ensure that my COI is disclosed and I'm also within the rules.

  • Do you understand that to be considered for an encyclopedia article, the subject must be notable?

I understand notability to the best of my knowledge. For example, I know that most blogs and press releases shouldn't be used, and that I must be looking at things such as industry news sites, magazines and major publications (such as the WSJ) for references. I also understand that the point itself must be encyclopedic and relate to the subject. For example, if there was something trivial about a company's history, even if it features in a major publication, it might not need covering. IronFX wiki (talk) 12:55, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Your unblock request has been accepted, as you have confirmed that:

Please submit a request at our username change request board, ensuring that you do not edit elsewhere on the project until the name change has been completed. Remember: changing the username will not allow you to violate the important principles above. Daniel Case (talk) 14:04, 14 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
