Orphaned non-free image File:Golden Wattle Flag.jpg[edit]

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Golden Wattle Flag.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hammersoft (talk) 12:43, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free files in lists[edit]

Per WP:NFLISTS, we generally do not permit the use of non-free files in lists, such as you attempted here. I've reverted your changes that added such files to list articles. Please do not restore them. If you have questions, let me know. Thanks, --Hammersoft (talk) 12:41, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Was there some part of the above that was not clear? Could you please explain why you reverted here and here? --Hammersoft (talk) 13:08, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The flag used per the Golden Wattle design is a severely-reduced resolution version to fit with the compliance of non-free images. The use of the flag as a proposed design does not fit in any other article other than the list, but is a relevant and necessary addition to the list. I have spoken with the creator of the flag and, compliant with their wishes, have uploaded the flag in a reduced-quality version so that it may be used in the article without surrendering copyright ownership.
I believe the above circumstances allow for the use of the image in this regard. Please let me know if you need any further information or justification. The Elephant's Foot (talk) 13:20, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Simply put, it doesn't. The permission of the creator of the flag has no bearing here at all. So let's just set that aside. The reality is that if a non-free image is not significant enough to have an article dedicated to it, there can't be any valid justification that it's significant enough that it must be included on the project at all. This is why WP:NFLISTS exists. If we were to take your approach, there would be no limitation to having non-free images on list articles. --Hammersoft (talk) 14:47, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've waited a day, without response. I've re-removed the image from the article and tagged it as orphaned again. Please do not undo this. If you disagree with these actions, you're welcome to raise the issue at WT:NFC where you can inquire about getting an exception. Though, an exception is unlikely. --Hammersoft (talk) 16:31, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
