I am back

[edit]

After a few months of being away I have recharged and am ready to start working on wikipedia again. I will be more focused on article building and less on administrative duties for a while until I get back into the swing of things. ZooPro 13:00, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A belated welcome back! I see you have signed up as WP Zoo coordinator again, which is just as well since I'm going to be challenged at work the next few months (actually, have already been frazzled for a couple of months) and will not be able to be as active as I wish. I've been monitoring zoo articles (all of them that I know of are on my watchlist), and fixing and nudging them as needed, but have not been able to do any real writing. After mid June the worst should be over and hopefully I can go back to doing some actual research and writing. Cheers. Don Lammers (talk) 14:07, 19 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A cup of tea for you!

Welcome back, and Happy New Year! Happy to see you'll be contributing again, no matter what the level. Thanks =) SarahStierch (talk) 16:22, 7 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Billabong Koala and Wildlife Park

[edit]

I went to add a link to the ZAA membership list, but don't see this park mentioned anywhere on the ZAA site. Nor do I see the ZAA logo or mention of ZAA on the zoo site. Can you provide another reference besides the standard membership page for ZAA membership?

Oops, I found it under associate member (I thought I had looked there). However, that b rings up the membership list in the ZAA article, which says "Current Full Institutional Members". Even just listing these, the list is not complete, but if you plan to have this list include associate members, the list is even more incomplete. I have gone ahead and put in a link to the membership page, reworded as "includes", and gotten rid of "Full". Nevertheless, the list needs a good scrubbing. Don Lammers (talk) 11:55, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I will give it a good cleaning within the next 24 hours, Cheers ZooPro 12:08, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Online Ambassador, Spring 2012

[edit]

Hi, ZooPro! As you may know, the Wikipedia Education Program has instilled a new set of standards that courses must meet to officially join the program for the semester. As you can see, one of the requirements is that at least one ambassador or professor is a Wikipedian, as this should give students more access to helpful information about contributing to Wikipedia and creating good content. You are listed on the Online Ambassador page; are you still interested in remaining active this semester? Some of these classes will have to remove themselves from the program should they fail to meet these standards, but we would like to ensure that new students are receiving proper support during the editing process. Please let me know if you are still interested in mentoring these students this semester and/or visit the Online Ambassador talk page to select a course that still needs an Online Ambassador. Thank you! JMathewson (WMF) (talk) 00:20, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WP Amphibians and Reptiles in the Signpost

[edit]

The WikiProject Report would like to focus on WikiProject Amphibians and Reptiles for a Signpost article. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Multiple editors will have an opportunity to respond to the interview questions, so be sure to sign your answers. If you know anyone else who would like to participate in the interview, please share this with them. Have a great day. -Mabeenot (talk) 23:15, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Word choice

[edit]

I would like you to reread the statement you supplied for the Signpost, regarding the Saltwater Crocodile.

In particular, I would suggest that one of the things you said about saltwater crocodiles is very probably a poor choice of words on your part, since the alternative could be taken to imply that you participate in activities of dubious legality.

If you wish, you can edit the Signpost yourself to amend or remove the statement in question. DS (talk) 23:29, 5 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm while I doubt anyone would have made any connection as I sure didn't (infact I use this very statement in crocodile shows) I have removed what I believe you are referring to. Kind regards ZooPro 07:32, 6 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox zoo template

[edit]

I haven't heard from you for a while. Are you doing OK?

I have added a new parameter to Infobox zoo: floorspace. It's been driving me crazy that I have to use area for aquariums, and this shows up as Land area. Rather than changing the existing parameter, I added one. In some cases even aquariums have both land area and floor space. Don Lammers (talk) 17:57, 7 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mate, Sorry have been having a very hectic year with work, Great work on the infobox. I will be back to full strength soon, Thanks for the concern :) ZooPro 15:04, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Glad to hear you are OK. Hectic I can understand, as it describes my last 4-5 months as well. I haven't really done much until this past weekend except triage on my watchlist to keep the vandals at bay. It looks like my hectic will be receding now for at least a while -- or at least I can hope. Don Lammers (talk) 19:43, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Reporting in on current activity

[edit]

I just finished several overlapping projects (I've been on staycation):

  • "Scrubbed" categories for articles that should be in the project, and netted more than 350 "new" articles, categories, etc.
  • Added articles to the lists of zoos as required, and to zoo templates.
  • Made sure every article I found had at least two projects listed. For zoos this is WP Zoo and the jurisdiction (state, country, city, etc).
  • Formalized" what I had already been doing (sort of) with redirects. All redirects that show up on the WP Zoo Redirect-class page are now potential new articles. For redirects that were just an alternative spelling, old name, etc., I redirected the talk page to the target article talk page, so they do not appear on the Redirect-class page.
  • Did a cleanup on the article requests page, including instructions for Redirect-class articles.
  • In the process, I reassessed some articles which obviously needed it (this wasn't the primary focus), and did a few stub to start updates myself (makes for a good distraction).

Next I'm going to go back through the categories and:

  • Make sure each has a description and each has WP Zoo as one of its projects. Most of them seem to have only WP Architecture.
  • Fix some inconsistencies in the way aquarium categories and lists are handled.
  • Add categories as needed to get rid of zoos and aquaria from the main Zoo and Aquaria categories.

We are up to 1670 "articles" now. This will probably put us over 1800. Do you know of any way we can get notified when a category starting with "[[category:Zoo" gets added to an article, or "{{WikiProject Zoo" gets added to a talk page (or periodically run some sort of report)? If not, we are stuck with scrubbing periodically, which seems so 20th century.

Cheers! Don Lammers (talk) 21:27, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I finally moved this article to the main space about 3 weeks ago. During the above exercise it looks like I added about 10 former zoos that I didn't know about. Amazing what comes out of the woodwork. Don Lammers (talk) 21:35, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Zoos template

[edit]

A discussion is ongoing here about the usage of the {{Zoos}} template and where (if anywhere) it is appropriate to use. If you are interested, come join in the discussion. Don Lammers (talk) 00:35, 24 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

[edit]

Are you doing OK down there? There doesn't seem to be much activity on your part lately -- something over a month ago, then nothing at all until today. Hopefully you and yours (and the zoo) are all doing OK but just busy. Don Lammers (talk) 15:55, 26 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey mate, yeah going along alright, been through some rough stuff recently so have kept away from the computer a lot, recently split with my wife so just taking it all one day at a time. We are still busy here as we have opened a few new displays but most of all has been our staff changes that have kept us busy. I will be back editing in the near future mate. Cheers ZooPro 14:07, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to hear about the split. That's always a bad time (though fortunately I can't speak from experience). Hang in there. Don Lammers (talk) 00:51, 30 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks mate much appreciated, I will edit more often dont worry just getting back into it all. Cheers ZooPro 14:39, 30 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
