Original – Promotional poster for the play Sherlock Holmes (1900) by William Gillette. Gillette's Holmes was the first to utter "Elementary, my dear Watson", a phrase that never appears in Arthur Conan Doyle's stories. It was also Gillette who introduced the famous curved pipe as a trademark Holmes prop.
