Please use this page to request documents from the National Archives. These may be single documents or larger batches. You may search for potential documents using the National Archives' Online Public Access or ARC catalog; please include a permanent link to the catalog record for your requested document, or an ARC identifier for a specific series that you'd like searched. Generally, files—whether image, sound, or video—which have already been digitized are only public on the National Archives' website in a scaled-down form, so requests for these are also useful. Keep in mind that not all items have been even cataloged, so general requests for images related to a given topic may also be accepted. Requests related to existing or planned article content will be prioritized.
Please note: this page is experimental. It is yet to be seen if all requests can be fulfilled on a regular basis, but it will still be useful to know if there are highly valued collections that need to be freed.
These are all films. Was that your intention? (If so, I will still inquire about them. I just wanted to be sure, since you referred to them as images.) Dominic·t17:38, 23 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Not exactly I was mostly looking for images of the individuals. The films could be useful depending on what they are of if we upload them to commons I could link them to the articles though. --Kumioko (talk) 18:49, 23 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I know exactly (Edit: Posthumous MoHers are a little more difficult to find images for, but will try) where these are, will scan images on Monday when I get back to the office and have a free moment. BcNARApix (talk) 16:23, 25 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I found a view of SGT Belcher, but it's a pretty poor shot, out of focus. I'll have it up by 5, and you can decide if its worth it. There's supposedly a second, color, view of him in our holdings but I think it might be available only as a neg so it will take me some time. Also, the only view of SP4 Evans I found is the same one that is linked to in his article. Haven't gotten to Monroe yet. BcNARApix (talk) 19:27, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I found the views of Monroe and Belcher, but I ran into some issues with uploading them. I brought in an external HDD so I will upload them when I get home this evening. BcNARApix (talk) 17:54, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again for the help. I just wanted to followup. Did you have a chance to upload the image for Monroe yet? --Kumioko (talk) 19:11, 5 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Having trouble locating it (I found the entry in the index for Monroe but not the print), although we should have a view of it somewhere. Unfortunately I've been swamped in other work recently so haven't even rechecked. I will have a definitive answer for you by the time I leave today BcNARApix (talk) 20:31, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There was studies done in 1993 and 1996 regarding prejudicial practices in the awarding of Medals. Specifically to Asian Americans and African Americans but also to Jewish Americans (Tibor Rubin for example). I am having trouble locating these 2 documents so if you have them and can provide them in some form it would be greatly apprecited. --Kumioko (talk) 19:21, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Do you know who ordered the production of the report? Was it federally requested, i.e. by Congress, DoD, White House, etc etc? If it was a public think-tank or something of the sort, odds are extremely good that NARA does not have it, although I must say I don't dabble much in textual material. If you know where it came from, it might help a little in finding it, and even if it is federal, being in that it's relatively recent material it may still be held by the agency of origin. BcNARApix (talk) 20:34, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Does the National Archives have a public domain portrait of Ansel Adams? Also, is there an image available of Ansel Adams' official portrait of Jimmy Carter? Cullen328 (talk) 20:05, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, all I can find are some really awful 35mm contact sheets of Adams during his visit in c. 1979. I can scan them and try to clean it up a little, but it's not going to look very good. Everything else I've found is copyrighted. Also, it seems like the Carter portrait may have been commissioned unofficially of Carter's presidency. Probably will have to talk to the Carter library for that one.BcNARApix (talk) 20:44, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Also, in relation to the "Today's Document" challenge, I am interested in the subjects of July 7, July 12, and August 30, so if full-res scans of those can be obtained, it would be greatly appreciated.
Any luck on the July 12 one? I'm not done with the article yet, so no worries, but if you can get that one before the others, that'll be great. /ƒETCHCOMMS/18:41, 5 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I poked around, and it looks like we no longer have the TIFFs, if we ever did. I was able to get some high(ish)-resolution JPGs, though. Dominic·t21:08, 5 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know if anyone at the Carter library is helping with the Wiki, but they hold these images. I'll do a search for Mota and Yastrzemski and see if I can find anything, but I'm afraid it might be in the USIA files and subject to copyright, if we have any views of them at all. BcNARApix (talk) 19:22, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I am having a conference call with the staff from the presidential libraries later this week, so I might have a contact who can help with these then. Dominic·t19:42, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
And I don't think there are any copyright issues, that's why I requested them. They all are listed as created by White House photographers, which should leave them in the public domain. Staxringoldtalkcontribs02:32, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, I was unclear. I was referring to other images of the two playersthat my division might hold, not the ones with Carter that you listed. The Carter photos are indeed unrestricted. BcNARApix (talk) 16:00, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Currently, the only image in William Calley is non-free even though he was a US Army officer so there should be (at a minimum) a free official portrait of him floating around somewhere. I've searched and searched online, and can't find any, though. NARA holds "Records of the William L. Calley General Court-Martial" under ARC # 562118, with some unrestricted photos at ARC # 562351. The description doesn't say exactly what's in there, so maybe there wouldn't be a free photo of him, but if you have the inclination to go through the materials to look for an Army-created photo of him, that would be great. Thanks! Calliopejen1 (talk) 18:44, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
These are textual records, which often have photographs attached as you've pointed out. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone with Textual is involved with the Wiki project yet, and I can't help because it's not my branch. Dominic might have a scan in his vast compendium that he has access to, but otherwise you might have to send this in as a research request to the textual fellows, which can take a while, and won't really allow for a decent scan, unless social media gets it and scans it. I will conduct a search in Stills holdings on Monday to see if we have a portrait: just FYI, even if military personalities are officers it doesn't guarantee that the portraits taken of them were kept as matter of record, but since he had a little notoriety the odds are a little better. Let you know Monday. BcNARApix (talk) 01:52, 23 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I did a check of our Army personalities during Vietnam and I couldn't find him referenced in any of the Signal Corps photos. I have a few other places to check, but I ran out of time today. Chances are the textual description would be the best bet. BcNARApix (talk) 21:20, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Portraits of retired (or deceased) four star generals
Any chance we could get portraits of USAF or US Army four star generals digitized? I inquired at multiple places about these and they directed my to the National Archives, saying that this is where all the military portraits go. I've got a list of some Generals with low-quality or non-existent portraits below:
Not expecting anyone to take this up, but a few (the bolded) would be nice if possible. Now I'm just realizing that some portraits I updated from defenseimagery.mil were portraits of the generals at lower ranks, so I'll have to go through that again. Thanks. Connormah (talk) 18:33, 29 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
We should have views of a number of these. I've been out of town and haven't been able to check up until now, and this week will still be busy as I'm not going to be near the stacks for most of the day. I should be able to go through at least the bolded ones by the end of next week. I'd recommend that you check to see if any of these images are not digitized in ARC already; if they are and are of low-quality, more than likely Dominic will be able to port the original TIFF, and if he doesn't have it the ARC Identifier will make my search for the most part instantaneous and all I would have to do is rescan the print. Check ARC at http://research.archives.gov/search if you haven't done so already. BcNARApix (talk) 18:25, 15 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
One other thing - what should I be typing into the search feature to bring up my desired results? I'd tried in the past, but to no avail, so I was just wondering. Also, I'd prefer the portraits of the generals to be ones with the four star insignia, but if none are available, it's okay. Thanks in advance. Connormah (talk) 23:17, 17 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunetly, at least in my experience with ARC, unless you're intimately familiar with the system, using it can be extremely user-unfriendly. Beyond just typing in the gentlemens' names, I don't expect you to find much. Less than 1% of NARA's holdings are actually digitized, and ARC is even only 68% percent complete at the series description level, so there's quite a bit to be had offline that isn't even reference in that system. I just figured give it a shot to see if you can find one or two mainly because of my being scheduled working with the public this week so I wouldn't be able to get to it (i.e. I was trying to pass the buck a little :-) ) If you do find something however, even if there is no digital copy on ARC, let me know. I really feel ARC is more of a tool for NARA staff than for public researchers, just because we're more familiar with how the system works. BcNARApix (talk) 13:34, 19 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Just went through the list of 4 star Army generals - there's a bit more, sorry. (you can take one year to finish this for all I care) – Connormah (talk) 18:55, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Here is the list I was hoping you might be able to help me with. No rush whenever you find the time. These are the living or recently deceased Medal of Honor recipients we don't currently have any image at all for.
I was hoping you either had something of the individual or at least of the ceremony. Even if you only have a couple that would be a great help. Thanks and please let me know if you have any questions. --Kumioko (talk) 18:41, 15 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've gotten started on these, and scanned the first three, got about 6-7 images in total with some alternates. Again, I'm hamstrung by upload limits here, so 2 are up, and three will be when I get back to my own computer. BcNARApix (talk) 21:24, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Glad I could help, and again, apologies for delays. Its been a real pain trying to coordinate with using the equipment at work to scan, and then send it to myself to upload due to bandwidth limitations. The views of Coolidge, one of Currey and both of Fitzmaurice didn't come through the email, nor did the caption for one of the Currey shots (I'll update that one when I get to work straight away). I will keep my external harddrive on me from now on so I don't have to worry about the self-emails not coming through. BcNARApix (talk) 10:30, 13 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No problem on the wait. I appreciate you taking the time to track these down. I already added 2 of Curry's to his article and Ill try and work in the third as well as adding a link to commons. I'll also keep a watch out for the others. --Kumioko (talk) 14:00, 13 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
When working on bio articles for veterans, there are often discrepancies among their reported service locations and dates, awards and decorations, etc. (e.g. Charles Durning). I see that vet records become publicly accessible 62 years after separation, which means we can have access to WWII and some of Korea now. It would be great to have these as a resource. Has there been any talk of making them available in bulk, or something more streamlined than having to file separate requests for every person? —[AlanM1(talk)]—00:46, 27 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I was wondering if any resources for U.S. roads can be located for inclusion of the articles subordinate to Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. Roads. I am not good at research, but I — as one of the many editors there — would like to update the articles with good reliable sources. Thanks. Allen (Morriswa) (talk) 20:48, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
