Problems with video on Firefox on Fedora Linux[edit]

I am using Mozilla Firefox 96 on Fedora 35 Linux. I have problems playing videos, for example on YouTube. The video loads, but never actually starts playing. It's stuck at 00:00. I can jump forward in the video after it has streamed enough, but it still won't actually play, it just skips to a different frame. This doesn't happen after a fresh reboot, the videos play OK then. But afterwards they just stop playing. The only solution I have currently found is a system reboot. This is not a hardware or a network problem as the videos play OK at first. Is this a problem with Firefox or Fedora? Has anyone else had this problem? JIP | Talk 16:17, 6 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I use Firefox on Linux also, the only time I see similar problems is if I run an update while firefox is open. Could that be your issue? In that case restarting Firefox helps. Is it only YouTube or also other video sites (e.g. Vimeo or Twitch)? Also, try running Firefox from the command line; it probably won't help but often programs output console information that can be helpful in debugging. 213.125.74.90 (talk) 14:49, 10 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It's not just YouTube, it's also any other website playing videos. Linux itself has no problem playing videos, as VLC plays locally stored MP4 files just fine. This is probably an issue with Firefox or one of its components. JIP | Talk 18:19, 10 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Will vids continue to play in eg Chrome or any other browser? "You can also try deleting the file "~/.mozilla/firefox/<random letters>.default/pluginreg.dat", which apparently often fixes a common issue where Firefox thinks a plugin is outdated and disables it even when it's not." It's not just Firefox, videos won't play on Chrome or Midori either. Static content loads all OK, and I can play locally stored MP4 files on VLC. It's just that videos won't play on any browser. JIP | Talk 10:29, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
